The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) provides the clerical support to the clinical team in carrying out the daily functions of patient care. The HUC is responsible for transcription of physician's orders, maintaining the patient's medical record, related forms and documents from admission to discharge. Provides the communication link for processing information/requests to and from patients, staff, visitors, physicians, and other departments or agencies.

Accurate Transcription of Physician's Orders:

Reviewing orders as written, notifying the nurse of any STAT orders Completing the necessary computer order entry and/or requisitions on a timely basis and forwarding to the appropriate department Scheduling diagnostic tests with the appropriate department Document completion of orders transcribed Completing all clerical activities related to admission, transfer or discharge of patient.

Communication/Clerical:

Able to multitask during periods of high-activity or high-stress Communicates effectively with healthcare providers Utilizes proper phone etiquette. Assists with answering phones. Demonstrates customer service when interacting with patients, families, healthcare team members, and staff from all hospital departments Entering appropriate information in electronic communication system Answering patient call lights promptly Paging/calling the appropriate personnel as needed Notifies appropriate healthcare provider of critical test results Acting as a receptionist, maintaining a positive attitude to greet and assist patients, visitors, physicians, and staff from all hospital departments Serving as a resource for unit as needed Ensures patient information is handled according to HIPAA.

Chart Responsibilities:

Assembling the charts on all new admissions Perform chart maintenance throughout shift Promptly adding reports to the chart as needed Facilitates charts to medical records Copying charts as needed Breaking down charts of discharged patients and placing in designated spot for Medical Record pick up.

Unit Environment and Unit Accountability:

Performing courier duties as directed by the RN. Completing the admission, transfer, discharge log board, and statistical logbooks. Assists with ordering and stocking supplies/equipment/forms Assisting with placing patient charges Facilitates the maintenance of a clean, safe and organized environment. Performs the duties of a patient sitter as needed Notifying the nurse immediately if equipment is not available. Assists with unit's statistics and Quality Improvement Data Demonstrates the knowledge and willingness to work in multiple areas Assists in orienting and mentoring new personnel/volunteers.

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. HUC education from college or vocational school preferred.

Years of Experience: 1-2 years equivalent customer service experience.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Takes initiative on tasks with minimal supervision; self-starter.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communications skills both written and verbal required.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills with Microsoft Software packages, including Word, Excel, Outlook and database management.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a demanding environment are essential.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology preferred
  • Completes yearly mandatory unit specific, hospital and safety education
  • BLS (if not certified at hire, can receive training during orientation)
