The Biologics Research Center (BRC) at Novartis’ Biomedical Research is looking for a highly motivated Senior Scientist with strong technical expertise and extensive hands-on experience in state-of-the-art downstream processing and characterization of recombinant proteins to join our Antigen & Therapeutic Protein Production (ATP) group in Basel, Switzerland.

As a lab-based scientist, you will handle various purification systems, from small-scale high-throughput platforms to large-scale systems, and use various analytical tools to deliver high quality proteins and antibodies to support the Novartis biologics research pipeline. You timely deliver materials and data, approach work with urgency, manage multiple research activities in parallel and adapt quickly to changing demands. You contribute to method development to speed up our processes and further improve the quality of our deliverables.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Protein purification from small to mid-scale (microbial, insect and mammalian cell culture; supernatants and cell pellets) and in-process protein analytics
  • Close alignment and collaboration with colleagues in ATP and in Analytics, Bioanalytics & Function (ABF), as well as with other scientists across BRC/BR for a smooth transition
  • Independent design and execution of experiments
  • Independent data interpretation and troubleshooting
  • Literature search to solve problems or implement novel technology
  • Comprehensive and timely documentation of activities in electronic lab notebooks and relevant databases; contribution to scientific reports
  • Lab management and maintenance (technical equipment, reagents, consumables, ...)
  • Consolidation, reporting and presentation of data in context

Role Requirements

What you will bring to the role:

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in industry, preferably in early biologics drug discovery, with MSc University degree in a relevant life science discipline, or at least 5 years of relevant work experience (--as before--) in industry with either completed apprenticeship or BSc University degree in a relevant life science discipline.
  • Strong expertise in protein purification (ALC, SEC, IEX, HIC, RP, ...) and associated processes (cell lysis, filtration, lyophilization, ...) from mg to g scale
  • Solid expertise in protein analytics, such as HPLC/UPLC (SEC, RP), light scattering, UV spectroscopy, MS (data interpretation)
  • Experience in automation (e.g. TECAN), conjugation or protein refolding is of advantage
  • Business-level/fluent English is a prerequisite
  • Accurate and independent working style
  • Well-developed interpersonal / communication / team skills in an international cross-cultural environment with an enthusiastic pro-active attitude.
