Job Summary

Under general direction in a collaborative team environment, the User Interface (UI) Designer performs web-related assignments, including but not limited to creating (designing and programming) new web pages, redesigning and programming existing web pages for SLCC.edu. Maintains, edits, and updates web content for Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) student-facing, department, staff, faculty, stakeholder, and other websites/web pages at slcc.edu. Posts and rotates content across various areas of the website. Optimizes images and text files in the website environment. Serves as a programmer for the front end of the web ecosystem, utilizing expertise in HTML5, CSS3, jQuery, JavaScript, XML, XSLT, Velocity Template Language, and other technologies to conceptualize, architect, program, develop, and template SLCC’s internal and external websites and user interfaces.

  • Creates, designs, and programs new web pages.
  • Redesigns and programs existing web pages for SLCC.edu.
  • Maintains editing and updates web content for SLCC student-facing, department, staff, faculty, stakeholders, and other websites/web pages on main SLCC institutional webpages.
  • Updates and manages site integrations.
  • Creates web forms, digital maps, assesses analytics, builds custom web plugins, supports email marketing templates, supports Chatbot Engagement platform, and finds new integrations to optimize site user experience (UX).
  • Works with Institutional Marketing’s Design, Marketing Managers, Digital, and Public Relations teams to create strategic marketing and communication tactics to deliver messages to a variety of audiences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Proficiency in working with web-publishing tools and technologies, with knowledge of various web-based languages and frameworks such as HTML, XML, JavaScript, jQuery, Bootstrap and CSS, as well as design/imaging products like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and the Microsoft Office Suite to create online assets and services.
  • Understanding of and experience with basic elements of graphic and website design.
  • Foundational knowledge and understanding of best practices related to optimizing the user experience in a digital environment.
  • Foundational knowledge and understanding of best practices related to search engine optimization.
  • Ability to work collaboratively, manage deadlines, prioritize projects, and handle multiple responsibilities with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
  • Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

Minimum qualifications

Must fulfill at least one qualification below.

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer information systems, computer science, web design, business, marketing, or related field.
  • Associate’s degree in computer information systems, computer science, web design, business, marketing, or related field.
  • Four (4) to six (6) years experience in web design and web development, with demonstrated experience in creating and programming contemporary websites, web pages and web-based assets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional experience in higher education, with emphasis on two (2) year vocational training or a community college.
  • Knowledge and experience with Cascade CMS, Ellucian Banner ERP, and ChatBot or similar SMS systems.
