System Director, Financial Clearance

Position Highlights:

  • Position: System Director, Financial Clearance
  • Location: Skokie, IL
  • Full Time (40 hours per week)
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am – 5pm
  • Required Travel: Travel between sites will be required

Job Summary:

System Director of Financial Clearance has operational responsibility for the financial clearance functions across the System, including Pre-Registration, patient arrival, insurance verification, pre-certification, patient estimates, benefit counseling and financial assistance. This role develops and implements strategies to increase efficiency, improve processes, ensure price transparency, and enhance the patient experience. Reports to the Vice President of Patient Access Registration and Financial Clearance

What you will do:

  • Functional leadership and direct oversight of pre-registration, patient arrival, pre-certification, patient estimates, and financial counseling processes across the North Region. Indirect oversight for Financial Clearance functions and staff reporting through other NorthShore teams. Provides region-wide oversight for financially securing patient payments as appropriate prior to or at time of service.
  • Develops and implements highly efficient and effective financial clearance management strategies and develops workflows and processes that optimize staff efficiency while enhancing the patient experience and ensuring price transparency
  • Analyzes operation of the system; Creates, maintains, and updates policies and procedures to reflect current operations and to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations. Shares and communicates complex processes and information at a level of understanding for the appropriate relevant recipients
  • Continually reviews and analyzes the operations of the Financial Clearance areas, ensuring that staff are providing efficient and quality delivery of services while productivity targets are achieved. Manages operations based on data and metrics, consistently meeting assigned targets
  • Uses independent judgment to exercise authority on behalf of NorthShore by keeping the organization's mission, vision, and values at the forefront.
  • Develop and enhance positive working relationships with all levels of revenue cycle staff within the health system. Works with other directors to ensure process coordination and quality patient access to service is maintained
  • Display a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment to assuring highest quality output and standards, and continuous quality improvement
  • Collaborates with leadership team to ensure employee engagement and leads initiatives to retain staff and create a positive work environment
  • Evaluates technology solutions to support financial clearance functions and create efficiencies, including Epic enhancements. Monitors trends in the industry for new opportunities for efficiency and best practice. Manages operations based on data and metrics, consistently meeting assigned target
  • Meets regularly with management team to review performance, identify areas of opportunity, and ensure consistency across sites. Develops managers to expand their skills and knowledge
  • Collaborates with Registration and Financial Clearance leadership who provide day-to-day onsite oversight of Financial Counseling staff located at their assigned Hospital locations. Ensures staff are effective, responsive, and appropriate.
  • Assists Vice President in the development and management of departmental budget. Seeks opportunities to conserve costs without compromising patient care or revenue and reimbursement. Manages supplies and expenses within the allocated budget guidelines.
  • Provides On-call coverage outside of normal business hours, as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned when necessary to maintain efficient operations of the financial clearance departments and of NorthShore as a whole

What you will need:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration, or related fields, or equivalent work experience. Master’s degree preferred
  • Certification: Certified Application Counselor within the first year of employment
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years’ experience in the management of hospital patient access, pre-authorization and financial clearance staff and processes, or 7 years’ experience in a revenue cycle management role
  • Unique or Preferred Skills:
  • Epic Experience preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with knowledge of all government and commercial payor requirements in hospital and clinic settings, to ensure timely verification of coverage, authorization for medically necessary care and prescribed medications.
  • Strong analytical skills; able to read, understand and analyze complex data and to generate and present interpretive reporting.
  • Solid track record of building strong, collaborative relationships with clinical department partners, medical staff and leadership

Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions:

  • Requires light physical effort. May require frequent periods of standing or walking.
  • May require frequent lifting or moving of lightweight material.
  • Ability to multi-task in a high stress fast paced operation with patient, patient’s family and physician waiting for response
