Software Engineer - Platform

Job Introduction

This role is within the Aggregated Metadata Platform (AMP) team, which is a part of the Editorial Services division. Editorial Services purpose is to provide tools which enable the commissioning and production of content within the BBC. AMP is the glue which transports and transforms data between staff-facing and audience-facing systems. From when a programme is first conceived, through commissioning, production, broadcast and archive, AMP ensures that the metadata associated with the programme is available to those who need it in an accessible and reliable form.

AMP is a collection of small services which collect data from staff-facing systems, before normalising and aggregating it. The data is then passed on to audience-facing systems such as iPlayer, Sky, Freeview etc. via a series of APIs. As a team we practice agile techniques including: Kanban, BDD, TDD, Continuous Deployment and Pair Programming. Our services are mainly written for the JVM in either Java or Groovy, but we also find uses for other languages including Python, Ruby and Javascript. We deploy using a range of AWS services including: Lambda, EC2, RDS and DynamoDB.

Role Responsibility

  • The creation and maintenance of components which are reliable, maintainable and meet the users needs.
  • Continuous improvement; a commitment as an individual and a team to working smarter, not harder.
  • Collaboration; we believe we work most effectively when we work together. As well as collaborative planning and analysis, we practice pair programming.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Comfortable working in a JVM-based language.
  • Eager to apply themselves to any problem, whether that be analysis, architecture, programming or testing.
  • Has a desire to learn; both from the excellent training offered and from a diverse group of colleagues.
