Executive Director, UN Foundation Global Health Advocacy and Global Health Director, Better World Campaign

Position Overview

The Executive Director develops and manages UN Foundation global health advocacy work focused on Capitol Hill and the Executive Branch.

Working Relationships

The Executive Director reports to UNF Senior Vice President and President of the Better World Campaign. Serves as part of the UNF/BWC advocacy team which works in close collaboration with each other to craft and implement advocacy strategies, to share information with other team members, and to provide mutual support in high-intensity moments.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Crafts and implements overall UNF strategy to advance global health issues and ensure that strategy remains attuned to changing Capitol Hill and Executive Branch dynamics. All advocacy strategies include grassroots, Congressional, Administration, UN, and NGO engagement.
  • Supervises experienced team of global health experts focused on enhancing the U.S. investments and improving American policies related to malaria, global vaccination, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and pandemic preparedness and response and coordinates closely with global health campaign leadership.
  • Supervises global health grassroots campaigns to ensure coordinated advocacy and successful advocacy outcomes.
  • Serves as substantive and advocacy lead on three pillars of the Foundation’s global health advocacy: cross-cutting global health initiatives; multilateral engagement initiatives through WHO, UNFPA, and UNICEF; and the Universal Access Project.
  • Serves as primary liaison to coalitions focusing on advancing sexual and reproductive health, rights and justice (SRHRJ), and with key UN agencies in the SRHRJ field. 
  • Serves as an expert on global nutrition issues and works closely with advocacy partners to advance policy initiatives to improve nutritional outcomes for vulnerable populations.
  • Conducts meetings with congressional offices and Administration officials; fosters and builds new relationships in support of UN Foundation’s campaign’s advocacy agenda.
  • Staffs and advises UN Foundation President, Senior Vice President, and other senior staff for meetings with U.S. and UN officials on global health issues.
  • Develop and supervise implementation of campaign advocacy strategies, including:
  • Promote cross-team collaboration between various UNF global health focused campaigns, including writing quarterly updates and analysis of USG political landscape.
  • Work directly with Vice President for Global Health and the Global Health team on reporting to partners related to advocacy and ensuring close policy and strategy coordination on global health issues. 
  • Develop and implement strategies to effectively utilize campaign directors and other UNF leaders on Capitol Hill for advocacy purposes, including congressional briefings and testimony and Member staff meetings
  • Work with the UNF development team to approach new partners to support UNF advocacy work.
  • Coordinates advocacy efforts with other NGOs on issues in support of the United Nations related global health funding and policy, including UNF participation in global health advocacy roundtables.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director for the Better World Campaign on issues related to all UN agencies, including WHO and UNFPA, and serves as key member of UNF/BWC advocacy team with an ability to lend time and expertise to BWC-wide advocacy priorities.
  • Other responsibilities and tasks as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree or the equivalent advanced degree preferred; preferably in the fields of political science, international affairs, or public health.
  • Minimum fifteen years experience on Capitol Hill, and/or in the Executive Branch with congressional liaison offices, preferably in the field of international relations and global health.
  • Extensive experience in development of U.S. global health policy and/or global health advocacy required along with proven ability to deal with the U.S. Congress and the Executive Branch.
  • Proven ability to craft and implement advocacy strategies in the global health field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong management skills, and ability to interact with senior government officials and other representatives.
  • Ability to represent the organization to outside audiences required.
  • Ability to meet regular attendance/tardiness policy.
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle stress.
