Primary Purpose

Support the Sr. Sustainability Managers, Director of Sustainability and Chief Sustainability Officer in driving sustainable business practices across the enterprise. Support the stewardship, implementation, and communication of the company-wide sustainability strategy and activities. Drive and coordinate annual sustainability reporting process including identifying and successfully managing milestones and critical paths of report development and production from start to finish. Work cross-functionally with strategic communications, investor relations, finance, audit, and other business groups across Sempra and the operating companies to support effective communication of sustainability efforts and strategy through talking points, presentations, etc. Support various activities to effectively respond to key sustainability-related surveys and ratings. Provide cross-functional support to team members as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage the strategic progression of the company’s annual sustainability report. Develop content through outreach to key internal stakeholders. Review and understand internal sustainability-related data and incorporate into reporting.
  • Monitor trends, regulations and emerging issues related to external disclosures and execute reporting in line with evolving sustainability reporting frameworks.
  • Manage deadlines and coordinate the timing of various aspects of the reporting process. Assist on continual planning for the sustainability team’s various deliverables that occur throughout the year to help ensure successful, on time execution.
  • Develop an effective and efficient cross-functional working relationship between the sustainability department and key internal business partners including, but not limited to, communications, branding and investor relations to foster organizational alignment on Sempra’s sustainability strategy, messaging and reporting efforts.
  • Promote investor engagement by preparing responses to key sustainability-related surveys and ratings. These include the Carbon Disclosure Project, S&P Global, Sustainalytics, ISS, MSCI, JUST Capital, Moody’s, and others. 
  • Create other materials to support Sempra’s sustainability strategy, including talking points and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).
  • Other duties include but not limited to: Lead strategic research on sustainable business trends and management practices to help maintain Sempra’s leadership position. Evaluate Sempra’s performance in context of industry and other sustainability leaders. 

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, environmental science, sustainability, public policy, communications, required.
  • Master's degree in Business, environmental science, sustainability, public policy, communications, preferred.

Experience

  • 7+ years of experience developing communications and/or reports.
  • 7+ years of related experience in and knowledge of corporate sustainability or strategy development.
  • 5+ years of experience managing projects that are cross-functional.
  • 2+ years having a strong understanding of sustainability frameworks.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated project management experience, including the ability to plan and drive interdepartmental projects with autonomy, manage internal and external stakeholders, and adapt workflow as required.
  • Aptitude in completing a range of surveys that drive company performance on various industry rankings and investment indices.
  • Ability to successfully interact with individuals at all levels of the company to gather information and serve as ambassador of sustainability strategy.
  • Ability to work autonomously and accept responsibility. Must be able to plan, organize, manage and lead multiple projects, often under tight time constraints.
  • Collaborative working style with an ability to be effective both as an individual contributor and project manager in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in the sustainability field with a strong understanding of sustainability ratings and frameworks and trends in disclosure expectations.
  • Capacity to summarize complex information into clear oral and written communications; expertise in explaining complex concepts in a concise and understandable way.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire. 
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.
