About the opportunity

Ground engineering is the branch of civil engineering that focuses on the engineering behaviour of the soils and rocks beneath our feet – ground engineering combines civil engineering with geology. All civil engineering projects require ground engineering which means that ground engineers have the unique opportunity to play a vital role on a variety of different projects. Some examples of these projects include tunnels, bridges, highways, railways, dams, airports and dealing with natural hazards such as landslides and earthquakes.

Join us and you’ll have the chance to work on world-class projects as part of our Tunnelling and Ground Engineering team. You will be supported in learning new skills using specialist software, learning design principles and standards and assisting in delivering – and adding value to – our projects. You will gain experience working on multi-disciplinary projects undertaking geotechnical designs and calculations, producing technical drawings and supporting construction and ground investigation site work.

You will be assigned a dedicated mentor to guide you and oversee your development. You will be supported to achieve a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering (BEng), and professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) as part of this civil engineering degree apprenticeship.

Here's what you'll need

  • A minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points or equivalent
  • A keen interest in ground engineering
  • Strong communication and teamworking skills
  • A flexible and proactive self-starter who’s passionate about developing new skills
  • The ability to adapt and prioritise whilst juggling work and study priorities
  • Enthusiasm and curiosity to apply your skills to solve real-world problems
  • Empathy and listening skills to help you truly understand our clients’ requirements
  • A well-rounded person – worked in a bar? Been captain of a sports team or volunteered for a charity? Tell us – we’re looking for people with interesting stories and experiences!
  • You must have the permanent right to work in the UK

Apply before 5th January 2026 for your application to be considered in the first assessment window. You can still apply after this date if the role remains open to applications. However, you do so with the knowledge that we may not proceed with your application if the role is filled in the first assessment window.
