Description

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation is hiring for a Maintenance Mechanic II to perform repairs and maintenance on equipment used by the Bureau of Parks and Urban Forestry. This is a mid-level position responsible for daily repair and preventive maintenance, tire repair and operation of a service truck as needed.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Repair portable equipment such as zero-turn mowers, pull behind mowers, small mowers, and other equipment used in landscaping operations.
  • Performs preventative maintenance of equipment by repairing electrical equipment and tools, maintaining and repairing portable equipment and vehicles, inspecting, cleaning and changing air, fuel and oil filters, belts, hoses, coolants, oil and lubrication, sharpening blades, testing and repairing hydraulic, electrical and safety systems, inspecting and repairing frames, performing service calls, diagnosing problems, overhauling and rebuilding engines, inspecting, repairing and installing equipment, welding, lubricating equipment, changing switches, belts, and hoses on vacuum and scrubber, setting out transformers and delivering and collecting equipment.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational and technical processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Two years' experience as maintenance mechanic.

Valid Virginia Driver's license required.

Preferred experience includes:

Familiarity with Zero turn mowers, pull behind mowers, and small mowers and other equipment used in landscaping operations.

Knowledge of bench and hand held grinders, metric and standard sockets and wrenches that are used for repairing equipment.

Repair and maintenance skills highly preferred.

Virginia CDL, preferred.

Work Hours: M-F 6:30-3:00. Work hours are subject to change

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
