This Sales Engineer role specializes in the American Ductile Iron Pipe and Spiral-Weld Pipe (ADIP/ASWP) product lines, serving the water industry. From iron pipes with a diameter of up to 64 inches to spiral-welded steel pipes reaching an impressive 144 inches (12-foot diameter), our products are manufactured in Alabama, South Carolina, Michigan, and Texas. We are committed to environmental sustainability. AMERICAN operates in the expansive municipal water sector, spanning coast-to-coast across all 50 states, with our dedicated sales professionals strategically positioned nationwide. Our clients include municipal water authorities, consulting engineers who design projects for those authorities, contractors that manage project construction, and distributors who sell a variety of products to those contractors.

AMERICAN offers a prestigious six-month career development program at our headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama, where trainees learn about our products, travel with other Sales Engineers across the country, and demonstrate winning presentation skills. Upon completion, you will relocate to any territory in the U.S. to manage and further develop your market by building relationships with your clients. Ideal Candidate:

  • Territory Management: Displays willingness and ability to relocate to a designated Sales Division territory post-training, combined with the ability to effectively manage pre and post-bid activities within the designated territory.
  • Relationship Building: Demonstrates ability to establish and build long-term relationships with key stakeholders, including owners, engineers, contractors, and distributors.
  • Business Development: Experienced in Specification Writing
  • Responsibility and Impact: Exhibits capability to handle significant responsibilities and influence project plans/specifications.
  • Goal-Oriented Approach: Demonstrates ability to establish and actively pursue long-term sales and marketing goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Successfully complete six-month sales training program at AMERICAN headquarters in Birmingham, AL
  2. Relocate within a Sales Division territory to accommodate business needs
  3. Pre and Post bid management within your territory
  4. Establish and develop long term relationships with owners, engineers, contractors, and distributors
  5. Manage distributor sales force including price, conflict resolutions, relationship building, product training and sales force training to ensure that the distributor's actions are in AMERICAN's best interest
  6. Manage multiple projects simultaneously

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university. Proof of degree required.
  • Willing and able to travel a minimum of 60% of the time
  • Willing to transfer within the U.S. and/or within the Sales Division
  • Ability to read and interpret specifications for projects
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess knowledge and experience utilizing Microsoft Office software
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
