Position Information

The Hondo Maintenance Office is located in Medina county just west of San Antonio. Our Maintenance personnel are responsible for maintaining over 800 lane miles, including the major corridors on US 90 and IH 35. We use practices such as base repair, maintainer level up, pothole repair, sign/delineation maintenance, and other operations to keep state roadways safe for the traveling public. Annual Salary Ranges

General Transportation Tech I (A16): $40,918- $61,130

General Transportation Tech II (A17): $42,976- $64,469

General Transportation Tech III (A18): $45,521- $71,055

This position is for a General Transportation Tech I, II or III, depending on business needs and applicant qualifications. TxDOT reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on business needs and the applicant's work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors.

Position Description

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I

  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II

In addition to the duties listed above

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

General Transportation Tech II

In addition to the duties listed above

  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience*

  • Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications.

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • GTT I/II: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • GTT III: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement, from date of application
  • Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Lifting-raising objects from lower to higher position/horizontally to a different position
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc
