Summary:

Genesee & Wyoming (“G&W”) is a growing short line railroad operator with a broad North American and UK/European footprint. G&W owns or leases more than 100 freight railroads globally with 4,000 employees serving more than 2,000 customers over 13,000 track miles. The Tax Intern will be responsible for supporting the daily functions and activities of the tax department as well as special projects as necessary.

The internship is full-time (20 hours per week) from January through May with the opportunity to extend through the summer in our Rochester, NY office and paid at a rate of $21.00 hourly.

Responsibilities:

  • Compliance – prepare various state and other miscellaneous tax returns to ensure compliance with local and state laws
  • Research – perform basic tax research on domestic tax issues, including state and local tax questions, and various other related issues
  • Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for tax accounts
  • Assist with the calculation of estimated payments
  • Assist in preparing book to tax differences and the calculation of state apportionment
  • Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-starter
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree
  • Must have a valid drivers license
