36 Months, Fixed Term Full-Time Post
Position Summary
This project, EYESonEU, is an Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Teacher training grant. Educating for Empowered Youth Engagements on the EU (EYESonEU), builds on the 2021-2024 JMTT project, ‘Knowing Me Knowing EU’ (KMKEU). KMKEU created a digital, web-based, teaching and learning toolkit on Ireland and the EU which connected with the existing post-primary school curriculum around EU politics, history, and economy. Its aim was to target the 87% of 15–30-year-olds in Ireland who considered that ‘learning about EU matters, such as the functioning of the EU and its institutions, EU history or European culture, should be part of compulsory school education’ (Eurobarometer EB455, 2018, p.56).
Through its furthering of the ‘My Big Friendly Guide to the European Union (BFGtoEU)’ at primary level, and establishing of the ‘Discuss, Argue, Build the EU (DABtheEU)’ toolkits at post-primary level, the KMKEU project established training of teachers on EU matters and institutions for teachers of 5–18-year-olds. Engagement with teachers on that project provided keen insight on their lack of confidence to integrate the EU into teaching, even when school curricula facilitate it.
These main causes are:
To increase the engagement of teachers and young people, EYESonEU will provide a scaffold of training and tools to overcome these perceptions. It will support teachers to create empowering opportunities for young people to engage the European dimension of their citizenship. Thematically, it focuses on two strands: a) citizenship and b) policy. For citizenship, its resources will centre on EU values, rights, and civic literacy. For policy, its resources will centre on a spectrum of EU policies which include, but go beyond, economy to emphasise, environment, security and defence, migration, education, and digital services. It aims to land the EU’s relevance in daily life, beyond the limiting framing of financial supports. In its selection of topics and pedagogical approaches, EYESonEU will provide teachers with resources to facilitate interactive, empowering, and fun engagements on EU matters in local settings. The resources will design-in the intersection of citizenship and policy, and transnational perspectives for a deeper understanding of the context of EU policymaking.
The successful candidate will be hired for 36 months. They will work under the supervision of the PI to carry out the multi-disciplinary research into young people political socialisation, young people’s attitudes towards membership and deliberative agonistic democratic pedagogies, in the context of the European Union’s latest debates.
The project aims at delivering workable post-primary teaching and training material on European Union related debates through agonistic deliberative pedagogies. It is therefore essential that the successful candidate have an excellent knowledge of academic debates on deliberative democracy as well as European Union issues. They, together with the PI, will also be asked to deliver all training courses to post-primary teachers and accompany study-trips to Brussels.
