Job Information

The Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts seeks a non-tenure track Assistant Teaching Professor to direct of the FIU Athletic Bands. This is a full-time,12-month position that begins in July 1, 2024.

Responsibilities and Expectations

The Director of Athletic Bands oversees all artistic and administrative aspects of the Wertheim FIU Marching Band, the Court Side Players, Panther Gold, and the 15-member support staff for Athletic Bands. The successful candidate will be a dynamic leader who recruits and mentors music majors and non-majors for various ensembles and courses, fosters an inclusive learning environment, builds relationships throughout the community, and collaborates with FIU Athletics and all levels of the university administration. As an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts, the candidate should be able to teach courses including but not limited to instrumental music, music core curriculum courses, music ensembles (i.e., secondary ensembles), music education courses, and any other area(s) of expertise. University and School level service are essential for every faculty member in the School of Music.

Qualifications 

Candidates must hold a master’s degree in music (doctorate is preferred) and demonstrate expertise in directing marching, athletic, and concert bands at the collegiate level. Preference will be given to candidates who also demonstrate a successful record of teaching, recruiting, retaining, and mentoring students of diverse backgrounds.

Salary

Salary is commensurate with rank, qualifications, and experience.

The Wertheim FIU Marching Band

The Wertheim FIU Marching Band at Florida International University is made up of students from all FIU campuses. Representing over 30 majors and disciplines, the band is a microcosm of the diverse University and Miami cultures. The Wertheim FIU Marching Band is open to any FIU, Miami Dade College, or Broward College student by audition. Student members of the band receive both a stipend for participation and one hour of university credit. The band performs at all FIU home football games, selected away games, selected area high school marching band exhibitions, and two annual parades in Miami: the Three Kings Parade on Calle Ocho, Little Havana, and the Martin Luther King Parade in Liberty City. In addition, the band has been highlighted in videos with several recording artists. It performed the soundtrack for all C-USA Football on the beIN Sports Network during the 2018 season.
