This is a rare and exciting opportunity for a software engineer looking to take the next step in their career at a uniquely innovative, rapidly moving, high impact start-up. As a Senior Bioinformatics Developer, you will be responsible for supporting and improving our bioinformatics pipelines and LIMS in a fast-paced production environment. You will work directly with wet-bench scientists to improve our technology, and with bioinformaticians to improve our NGS algorithms. 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work with scientists to automate lab protocols and analyze results.
  • Collaborate with lab operations teams to support production lab environments.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues in a timely manner, including on-call rotations.
  • Optimize, update and maintain various production data processing and bioinformatic analysis pipelines.
  • Develop important bioinformatics tools, algorithms, and analysis methods to complement Elegen’s novel synthetic DNA production platform.
  • Build, optimize, automate, and maintain various processing or analysis pipelines.
  • Provide computational support and data-based guidance to the R&D and operations teams.
  • Design and build front-end analysis interfaces for internal use.
  • Help design and build databases and server networks for internal and external applications. 

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • BS or MS in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, genomics, or a related field. 
  • 5-7 years of industry experience.
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Python web development - Flask, SQLAlchemy.
  • Cloud computing, especially AWS (Batch, Lambda).
  • Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) analysis.
  • Workflow management systems - Cromwell/WDL/Nextflow.
  • Familiarity with software development best practices, including version control using GitHub, testing and tracking (Jira), continuous integration and deployment (Jenkins).
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in interdisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience with DevOps (AWS).
  • Experience with Lab Information Management Systems.
  • Familiarity with machine learning, statistics, and predictive modeling.
  • Familiarity with molecular biology or synthetic biology approaches and methods.
  • Project Management Skills.

Salary and Benefits:

The annual base salary compensation for this role, if based in California is: $160,000 - $185,000. Compensation may be different in other locations. Final compensation also includes bonus, equity and benefits. Specific offer packages are determined by multiple factors, including candidate skill, experience, expertise, and location.
