Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
Performs transcription services for Surgical Pathology. Provides and performs a variety of secretarial and clerical services as needed.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Listen to audio recorded dictation of pathology reports and accurately transcribe the dictation into typed reports;
- Review and edit drafts prepared by speech recognition software, insure that the transcription is correct, complete, and has a consistent style;
- Translate medical abbreviations and jargon into the appropriate long form;
- Identify inconsistencies, errors, and missing information within a report that could compromise patient care and communicate directly with the healthcare provider to ensure the accuracy of the reports;
- Enter and retrieve medical reports from electronic health records systems;
- Perform quality audits and participate in peer review;
- Use Excel spreadsheets to record data;
- Scan reports into a Health Information Management system;
- Track and file pathology materials including slides and blocks;
- Perform clerical duties as needed.

Work Experience
- One year of secretarial or office experience • Medical Transcription experience. Preferred.
Education
- High School Diploma • Completion of Medical Terminology course
Specialized Knowledge and Skills
- Type a minimum of 50 words per minute • Proper usage of spelling, grammar, and punctuation • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal skills • Ability to operate a desktop and/or laptop computer • Word processing experience • Type 70 words per minute. Preferred. • Familiarity with Word, Excel, and Power Point. Preferred.
