The Procurement team identifies researches and evaluates suppliers that meet the organization's standards of price, quality, timing, and reliability of supply. Recognizes and evaluate sales, promotional campaigns, and other opportunities to secure reduced prices. Assesses supplier's products to ensure that they comply with specifications and meet the organization's quality standards.
Whirlpool is looking for an experienced Tooling Engineer with a strong background in appliance manufacturing operations. As part of the Tooling and Equipment group, the successful candidate will work closely with E&T, Project Management, Commodity Management and our new product organization to define, coordinate and manage the acquisition of the necessary injection mold tooling to successfully manufacture and deliver winning new products to the marketplace. This will cover coveted brands such as Whirlpool, Amana, Estate, KitchenAid, and Maytag.
The successful candidate will be at the forefront of developing new appliance products by providing manufacturing early design consultation services, while establishing the early capital budget estimates.
Working closely with the Procurement group and Engineering and Technology to forecast and budget capital purchases.
Expert on providing molding assumptions (cycle, press size, cavity numbers) and capital investment with preliminary information.
Create efficient RFQs avoiding over-designing, requesting the exact quality for the product wanted.
Champion redesigning plastic parts to obtain benefits in capital investment and final cost of the plastic part.
Coordinating competitive quoting events, providing tooling specifications, evaluating and making tool supplier selections, and managing tooling projects through PIQ, tooling delivery and start-up.
Proficient skills to manipulate parts in 3D modeling software (CREO and AutoCAD
Efficient moldflow interpretations of potential issues and provide action plans.
Forecast appropriate spend targets, optimize tooling spend, and develop technical cost down opportunities with preferred tool suppliers.
Experience developing Best Cost Country suppliers in order to obtain benefits in capital investment and time without sacrificing quality.
Ensuring that tooling solutions are flexible in design to accommodate long range new product cadence plans with the intent of minimizing future capital requirements.
Champion designing plastic parts without affecting the performance of the piece.
Champion redesigning plastic parts to obtain benefits in capital investment and final cost of the plastic part.
Interface regularly with Commodity Management, Quality Engineering and Procurement representatives to align on Strategic Sourcing and gain alignment on tool supplier performance.
Leading projects and special assignments as required.
BSME, BSMET or equivalent.
Proficient English level, maintain technical conversation in English.
Solid experience with injection mold and product knowledge.
5 years of experience designing and reviewing tool design for injection molding.
Experience developing and implementing preventive and corrective maintenance plans for plastic injection tooling.
Prefer experience in home appliances.
Knowledge on tool construction processes (CNC, EDM, Wire, welding, grinding, etc) in order to calculate time and cost for new tools, repairs and modifications.
Knowledge of technical behaviors of resins used in home appliances.
Expert on spare parts and standard tool components catalogs.
Basic knowledge in Dies, EPS, extrusion, thermoforming and foaming tools.
Strong understanding of Lean Manufacturing concepts.
Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
Capable to analyze an injection molding issue and understand the root cause of the problem
Strong interpersonal and team building skills with the ability to work in a team environment.
Excellent project management skills.
Experience in at least 10 mega projects (70 tools per project)
Ability to translate component GD&T into tooling designs so that critical interfaces are assured.
Proficient on metrology having full knowledge on part prints.
Experience in new product introductions, including the direct planning and acquisition of the associated capital tooling.
Must have a demonstrated history of gathering input from key stakeholders and gaining their buy-in.
Must have a demonstrated history of success working in a matrix managed environment.
Must have demonstrated success in translating technical concepts to commonly used business language.
Engage tool suppliers and part suppliers with early supplier involvement to assure project success.
