As part of Network operations, you will play a critical role involving network transformation, network outages, service issues, network optimization, and maintenance. You will be responsible for providing support to keep things running smoothly and change the way that our customers live, work, and play. The Cary Network Management Center is seeking motivated and driven engineers to support management of Verizon’s Transport network and technologies as we leverage our existing Transport Networks with automation and turn of the century infrastructure. This position seeks intelligent, forward thinking, collaborative-minded, and adaptable engineers. Come see how you can enhance Verizon and our global customers. We are building and developing onsite training utilizing Verizon’s HR, Vendor support, Tier 2 Technical support, and On the Job training (scripting and automation)! Responsibilities include:

  • Performing optimization, troubleshooting, and maintenance of network equipment, finding ways to make it even better.
  • Providing surveillance/maintenance for Verizon’s Global Transport (Layer 0, 1 and 2) networks. Vendors include Coriant, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Ciena/Nortel and Fujitsu.
  • Complying with company- and industry-wide standard directives to maintain network performance and enhance efficiency.
  • Carrying out alarm monitoring, outage management, processing trouble tickets, maintenance scheduling and providing technical assistance to Field Operations on the repair of global transport platforms.
  • Monitoring the implementation of transport network change control activities and performs pre/post technology checks.
  • Escalating issues to the appropriate internal/external engineer teams for resolution.
  • Performing regular maintenance and proactive network monitoring.
  • Working with multiple technologies including: Synchronous Optical Network (SONET), Ethernet, Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM), Ultra Long Haul (ULH), Mesh and Digital Cross-Connect technology for both domestic and international facilities.

What we’re looking for...

You’ll need to have:

  • Must be a current participant of the Department of Defense Skillbridge Program or of the Hiring our Heroes Corporate Fellowship Program Cohort 2-2024.
  • Associate’s degree or two or more years of work experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule in a 24X7 environment (including nights, weekends, holidays, etc.).


Even better if you have one or more of the following:

  • A technical degree in Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Engineering, Business or a related discipline.
  • Experience working in a 24x7 Network Operations Center.
  • Experience troubleshooting Transport Networks. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide timely and accurate network information to both management and other organizations during network events and major, critical and catastrophic outages.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under stressful, fast paced conditions while multi-tasking.
  • Scripting with Python, No-JS, Perl, or equivalent languages with examples of projects implemented.
  • Experience driving automation initiatives.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications equipment and technologies like Telephony Switching, Data Communications and Network Routers.
  • Computer support experience, including troubleshooting PC hardware and configurations.
  • Vendor management experience.
