The Alexa Gadgets team works to expand the range of devices that connect to Alexa endpoints, developing 1st party new hardware and software, as well as services and support for 3rd parties to do the same. Most recently, the Alexa Gadgets team has released the new Echo Buttons & range of accompanying Echo Button skills; Light Rhapsody, the Alexa Controlled Holiday Lights; and the Alexa-Enabled Destiny 2 Ghost peripheral & skill. We will continue to grow and push on all fronts, leveraging new and emerging technologies to deliver delightful value to Alexa customers.

The Alexa Gadgets Games team is dedicated to producing entertaining Alexa Skills that leverage the new world of Alexa Gadgets. We work to validate hardware and services as they are being developed and produce day one content to set the quality bar for Alexa skills, where our quality bar is defined by the additional fun and delight we bring to Alexa owners.

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer with a passion for entertainment, experimentation and software architecture. As a content-oriented engineer, you will have the opportunity to directly impact customer facing aspects of cutting-edge products used every day, delighting your friends and family. As an Amazon engineer, you will affect how these are delivered efficiently, elegantly and at Amazonian scale, delighting your peers.

Responsibilities:
  • Develop and launch 1st party Alexa skills for Gadgets
  • Drive the system architecture used to develop 1st party Alexa skills
  • Influence our overall strategy by helping define product features across the Alexa Gadgets organization
  • Interact with cross-functional engineering and design teams across the company
  • Spearhead the adoption of applicable best engineering and design practices
  • Dive into and take ownership of emerging critical issues
  • Participate in design and code reviews
  • Mentor other engineers

The ideal candidate is clearly passionate about new opportunities and has a demonstrable track record of success in delivering novel products and incremental improvements to them. A strong sense product ownership and communication skills to both business and technical partners are absolute requirements.

Creating successful products in our space requires an engineer to have an exceptional understanding of fundamental and applied Computer Science, a practical understanding of User Experience design, and prior experience building entertainment-oriented software products. This person has thrived in environments where content driven development means rapid prototyping, incremental design, and feedback-loop driven agility.

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of industry experience, in video game engineering or similar fields
  • BS/MS in Computer Science or equivalent experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfort with several programming languages, including bash shell scripting, Java, or the C languages
  • A deep understanding of nodejs based Javascript engineering
  • Experience with AWS engineering basics, particularly DynamoDB, Lambda, S3 and Cloudwatch
  • Excellence in technical communication with peers and non-technical cohorts
  • A history of prior engineering leadership positions
  • A strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive
  • Comfort with continuous integration, testing and deployment mechanisms
  • A history of rapid prototyping
  • Experience developing Alexa Skills
  • Video and/or board game design skills
  • A history of working with emerging technologies during their nascent stages
  • Deep serverless computing experience
  • Writing skills, both narrative and technical
  • Audio engineering skills
  • Software image processing and generation skills
  • Experience with applied Artificial Intelligence
  • Experience with Maker skills, e.g. familiarity with RaspberryPi or 3D printing
