Job Description:

3M is seeking an experienced Data Scientist for our Lean Six Sigma Operations team located in Maplewood, Minnesota. At 3M, you can apply your talents in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.

Job Summary:

The ideal candidate for the position of Data Scientist is passionate about digging into large amounts of data, both known and unknown, structured and unstructured. This individual must have a strong interest in developing data and analytics solutions to address business problems, and can interact effectively with both the technology teams and the business units. You will contribute significantly to the vision of our data environment and our capabilities of analytics and data science. This candidate will be able to leverage past experiences in an engineering/analyst role to help make data more usable and accessible.

This position provides an opportunity to transition from other private, public, government or military environments to a 3M career.     

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Ability to conduct a variety of statistical analyses including data mining and predictive modeling
  • Able to understand, break down and explain complex algorithms
  • Research and explore data sources; at times, work with data and systems experts to understand the data and what it represents
  • Independently develops complex (type, quality, volume) data solutions and recommends data cleansing/quality solutions to solve the right problems
  • Build strong working relationships and communicates effectively with other engineers and data scientists
  • Enable implementation, standardization and replication of work through effective documentation
  • Actively participate in internal and external networking to extend knowledge and skills

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science or engineering discipline from an accredited university
  • Minimum five (5) years of combined experience in data analysis, data mining, and/or predictive analytics in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Minimum one (1) year experience with statistical packages (e.g. R, SAS, minitab, JMP)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with data engineering tools (e.g., Hadoop ecosystem)
  • Experience with the following: Airflow, Kafka, Spark, RapidMiner, Google prediction API
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in Python, Java, Perl or other languages
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience in SQL
  • Experience with big data and big data platforms (eg Hadoop)
  • Date warehousing or software development experience
