Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences
Our new colleague must have the expertise to teach and mentor students pursuing health-related careers. We are seeking someone who can teach some combination of Anatomy and Physiology, Advanced Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Science Writing, as well as Introductory Biology courses for majors and non-majors. Individuals with discipline-based education research and/or assessment experience are encouraged to apply. Opportunities will exist to develop courses in the candidate's area of specialty that complement our current courses and fulfill departmental needs. The typical teaching load for this position is 12 credit hours during each of the spring and fall semesters. Candidates must have a strong desire to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, mentor undergraduate and M.S. graduate research, and contribute to departmental and university service. There will also be opportunities to develop outreach and community engagement activities.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Biological Sciences has 16 full-time faculty positions representing the disciplines of anatomy, physiology, botany, ecology, microbiology, molecular biology, physiology, and zoology. The department offers B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology. Graduate teaching assistants facilitate undergraduate labs; additional graduate assistantships are available through the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, and donor-supported research fellowships. In the department, several colleagues with research interests in the biomedical sciences are supported by K-INBRE funding (https://www.k-inbre.org/). Available departmental research resources include microbiology and molecular biology research equipment, extensive aquatic and terrestrial sampling equipment, excellent computing and GIS facilities, outstanding technical support, large museum collections for plants, insects, and vertebrates, a tract of native prairie, a greenhouse, and other related resources. The department is housed in Albertson Hall, which includes technologically enhanced classrooms and laboratories. We are one of the only regional institutions to teach a Human Anatomy course with eight cadavers. The department employs a full-time lab coordinator, an office manager, and a half-time greenhouse manager.

FHSU is located in Hays, a vibrant college town of approximately 20,000, located halfway between Kansas City and Denver on Interstate 70. Hays is the regional center for education, health care, professional services, shopping, culture, and recreation for the western half of Kansas. The community boasts excellent recreational programs and facilities, including the comprehensive Center for Health Improvement, Hays Aquatic Park, Smoky Hill Country Club, Hays Municipal Golf Course, and extensive walking, running, and biking trails. Hays is within 45 minutes of two large lakes that offer great opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping.
