General Description and Classification Standards

Under direction of the Director or designee, assists with department-wide comprehensive plan from inventory, analysis, community engagement; produces GIS mapping and visually engaging graphic design packages to illustrate the parks and recreation system; generates master plans and landscape plans; organizes and coordinates small to mid-sized capital improvements; maintenance and repair projects, from conceptual initiation through construction and warranty closeout; works with community based “Friends of the Park” groups to review and advise on their initiatives; coordinates green infrastructure improvements; manages the playground replacement program; initiates and manages planning studies and performs related duties as assigned.

This is a fully seasoned professional level capable of independently carrying out most assignments typical of the profession.

Works under very general supervision. Depending on organization structure, may work independently with responsibility for an assigned function or program.

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to the LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT SENIOR classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified. With direction from Director of Park Design, plans and manages those assigned aspects of planning, design, development and implementation, which could include master planning, program development, technical research/ analysis, funding and cost analyses, scheduling, public involvement processes and project budgeting. Coordinates implementation of assigned projects with various city, regional, state or federal jurisdictions as necessary, as well as with special-interest groups, stakeholders and the public. Prepares requests for proposals for outside services; participate in the consultant selection and contract award process; may have to author related legislation; plans, schedules and directs the work of consultant teams in master planning, design and construction. Prepares and makes presentations before interested groups, public meetings, various agencies or commissions as necessary. Develops reports, memoranda, letters and other documents regarding project issues for both internal and external distribution; ensures the maintenance of detailed records of project activities, correspondence, findings, progress and results. Obtains necessary regulatory approvals and permits to implement projects. Advises supervisor when project progress is delayed, or budgets exceeded. Ensures assigned project compliance with federal, state and local laws, regulations and policies. Monitors and enforces all contractual terms, obligations and requirements. Monitors project budget and expenditures. Reviews technical drawings of projects submitted for DPR review and approval by outside partners and provides written comments. Assists outside partners with technical information. Conducts research as necessary for new applications of technologies and techniques to ensure critical analysis and incorporation of appropriate “green” materials and technology, security, CPTED, ADA, energy saving and user supportive improvements.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

Graduation from an undergraduate or graduate college/university program in landscape architecture, urban design, planning or a related field and minimum four years’ experience as a landscape architect, urban designer, planner and/or project manager on design and planning projects typical of those within the purview of the Office of Park Design or an equivalent combination of education and experience which equals or exceeds the above educational and work experience requirements. (Equivalent professional experience may be considered for substitution for educational degree on an exception basis)

Fully functional with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)

Fully functional with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)

Fully functional with GIS

Basic photographic capabilities.
