What makes this a great opportunity?

The International Compliance Officer is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of Beam Suntory’s Global Compliance Program across the International region covering EMEA. The position will report to the Global Chief Compliance Officer and will be based in Madrid, Spain. 

Role Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

Monitor current trends in compliance and assess potential vulnerabilities; analyze data and monitor applicable laws and regulations to recommend and implement appropriate strategy and program enhancements. Develop programs designed to mitigate legal, regulatory and reputation risks, in the area of FCPA/UK Bribery Act/anti-corruption and other compliance areas. Periodic benchmarking against peer companies to identify and implement evolving best practices. 

Design and implement the International region compliance framework including the preparation of the annual risk assessment process and annual plan. Track progress of plan initiatives and adjust as needed to changing conditions. Build and maintain robust cross-functional relationships across the International organization to drive and support compliance initiatives and requirements. 

Develop communication plans designed to raise employee awareness of the Code of Conduct, ABAC and related policies; draft the International region communication plan that includes development and delivery of training programs, materials and communications related to BSI’s compliance programs. Oversee onboarding and ongoing training and communications across the International region. 

Collaborate with commercial leadership to ensure compliance requirements and global best practices are embedded in daily business activities and the strategic planning process. Develop and review policies and procedures with input from key stakeholders to support the program objectives. 

Develop materials and drive the International Region compliance meetings with leadership. Coordinate the ERM process with Internal Audit and Chief Compliance Officer. 

Report on a regular basis to Corporate and International region leadership on the status of compliance initiatives and risk environment, update the Chief Compliance Officer, Legal and key commercial leaders within the organization. Update our shareholder as needed on compliance initiatives and programs. 

Work on global compliance initiatives and collaborate closely with compliance teams in various markets. Ensure the compliance resources are fit for purpose to match pace of the business. 

Maintain program initiatives with compliance vendors, including online training vendor and ethics hotline vendors. Work effectively with cross-functional teams to assess risks and implement compliance initiatives. Update and revise existing compliance policies and procedures, as required. 

Review transactional and process compliance of business partners in high-risk and strategic markets. Responsible for the selection of business entities and third parties for the program’s annual assessment. Manage ABAC investigations with support from external providers, as needed. Provide counsel to business and HR leaders on conducting effective investigations. 

Manage the International region third party diligence program that includes monitoring of third-party partners such as distributors, customers and vendors, executing training and data monitoring protocols and reporting results of such activities to the Compliance Team/Management. While being based in Madrid, this role will also work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders across the International region, as well as with compliance managers in other Beam Suntory regions, to ensure compliance with BSI’s policies and procedures. 

Qualifications

Required Competencies:

Ability to operate with high degree of independence while communicating and interacting within a matrix environment.

Ability to lead cross-functional teams and collaborate with other functions (e.g., Finance, Legal, Commercial, Internal Audit, etc.) to assess risks and implement compliance initiatives.

Identify issues, set strategy and implement remediation actions, with common sense, practical application of policies and regulations, and high level of judgment. Ability to work effectively with all levels within the organization and to leverage resources of other departments and divisions of the company. High level of engagement with legal and finance leaders as required.

Persuasive verbal and written communication skills to leadership and various stakeholders.

Maturity and decisiveness, including the ability to frame issues to support quick decision making as well as an understanding of business to know how and when to escalate issues.

Comprehensive knowledge of company policies, procedures and organizational structure.

Ability to travel as needed to support the International region compliance agenda.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from recognized institution

MBA, CPA, CA or JD (or equivalent) desired but not required

10 + years’ experience in the compliance, legal or finance fields

Knowledge of foreign language/s is a plus
