Job Description

You will be part of the Global Glass and Materials Science Discipline within Global Technology, which is responsible for research, development, engineering, and global operations at O-I. You will serve as a technical expert on glass container surface coatings such as hot-end coatings, cold-end coatings, internal treatments, and decoration. You will also establish a plant-based internal network and provide technical assistance on topics related to container lubricity, conveyance, labelling, decoration, scuffing, and filling line performance. In-plant work will involve training, troubleshooting, and solving difficult technical challenges. Additionally, you will be responsible for driving adoption of new technologies, processes, or standards which give O-I a competitive advantage in the packaging industry.

Principle Accountabilities

You will need to utilize the Glass & Materials Science Lab and Innovation Center in Perrysburg, Ohio. You can be onsite 3 days per week, with the balance being hybrid.

  • Technical point-of-contact for O-I’s global network of plants regarding surface treatments and coatings on glass containers.
  • Maintain and improve O-I’s specifications of surface treatment materials and processes (hot end, cold end, internal, ceramic label, and similar).
  • Collaborate with R&D scientists and engineers to design experiments, develop pilot and production-scale surface treatments and coatings.
  • Identify and close knowledge gaps regarding surface coatings impact on glass container performance.
  • Specify new equipment and upgrades, leveraging external vendors for engineering.
  • Maintain O-I specifications for surface coatings, evaluating new products and solutions.
  • Evaluate coating equipment and formulations available on the market.
  • Perform installation and set-up of surface treatment equipment.
  • Trouble-shoot issues related to scuffing, filling line performance, decoration, lubricity, and labeling either in the glass plant or at the customer’s site.
  • Work collaboratively with Quality Department, ensuring that containers meet functional specifications.
  • Establish working partnerships and collaborations, both internal and external to O-I.
  • Develop novel decorations and enhancements to container performance.

Reporting relationships:

This position will report to the Glass and Materials Science Discipline Leader in Global Technology. This position will have no direct reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering or similar field
  • 7+ years’ full time work experience applying surface coatings in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in evaluating coating formulations on product performance
  • Experience in manufacturing plants via roles either at the shop-floor level or providing technical support
  • Experience applying coating on glass substrates is preferred
  • English language – fluent
  • Spanish language is a plus
  • MS Office – advanced

Travel requirements: 

Up to 30% travel, both domestic and international.

Additional Information

Salary Range: 

The expected salary range for this position is between $93,000 and $116,200 a year plus STI of 10%. Actual pay will be adjusted based upon candidate experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
