Job Description 

The S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University invites applicants to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Visual Communications (VIS) department to begin Fall 2024. The successful candidate will primarily teach game design. Expertise in character design and 3D game design focused on player-centered design solutions with strong visual direction and interaction design preferred.

The main responsibility is to teach E-sports and gaming design. The ideal candidate should specialize in at least one of the following areas:

  • Game Experience Design
  • Interaction Design
  • 3D Design
  • Character Design

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate potential for conducting academic scholarship or producing industry-related creative activity that will position the hire as a recognized expert in the field. Participation in service and committee work for the department, the Newhouse School, and Syracuse University is expected.

QualificationsPrevious teaching experience is a plus, but not required. A master’s degree is required. Candidates must have significant professional experience in the practice of design as a game designer, design researcher, UX designer, interaction designer, experience designer, or illustrator. In addition they should have knowledge and experience of:

  • market research and target audiences
  • basic programming skills/concepts
  • basic 3D asset and environment creation
  • scripting languages (C++, python, blueprints, etc)
  • evidence of successful game development/engineering/designing and launch

They should also have knowledge and practice of accessible and inclusive design practices. The successful candidate will share in Newhouse’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Job Specific Qualifications 

Candidates should demonstrate their ability to instruct others by drawing upon their experience with current industry technologies and equipment utilized by professionals. Being versed in current technological trends as well as being a problem solver and a good team player are essential, as one of the key values and strengths of the school lies in collaboration and interdisciplinary praxis for students and faculty.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the potential to engage ambitious undergraduate and graduate students in one of the preeminent visual communications programs in the country. Courses the faculty member would teach range from: basic, intermediate and advanced design courses as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the gaming and design industry.

Responsibilities 

Primary teaching responsibilities include courses required of all Visual Communications majors and the Esports program with students on the Game Experience and Design track as well as other topics that reflect evolving practices in the industry.

The person in this role will also have the opportunity to teach and/or develop elective courses based on their expertise/background. The person in this role will teach five courses per academic year.

Tenure-track professors are expected to pursue activities that will position them as a well-known expert in their field. The Newhouse School offers a variety of financial support that allows professors to pursue their scholarly endeavors.

In addition to an academic year teaching load and pursuing a research/creative agenda that brings national visibility to the School, this faculty member will also engage in a variety of service duties, including academic and career advising of undergraduate students, school and university committee service, departmental curriculum development and assessment, and community/industry outreach. This position has a start date of August 2024.

About the Visual Communications Department

The Visual Communications department is regarded as one of the best in the nation. The department’s 11 full-time faculty/staff members, complemented by a specialized adjunct force, prepare future leaders in visual communications industries — primarily photography, cinematography, interactive design, and immersive experiences — by introducing students to practices and systems of production, distribution and exhibition, and their resulting impact on the world.

The Visual Communications department (VIS) is one of the most versatile in the Newhouse School.
