The Office of Communications and Digital Strategy serves as the central communications team for the Division of Undergraduate Education, providing marketing and communication leadership, strategy, services, and education to division stakeholders.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Executive Director of Communications and Digital Strategy, the Content Specialist is a creative and detail-oriented individual with strong abilities to tell stories and convey information in clear, concise, and engaging ways. They research, develop, write, and edit original content for print and digital materials on behalf of units within the IU Indianapolis Division of Undergraduate Education and for non-student recruitment functions within the Division of Enrollment Management.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Works with colleagues within the office and other division stakeholders to identify and meet content needs for division and client projects.
- Writes and edits basic and complex communication, marketing, and web materials by established deadlines for a variety of audiences and for distribution across print and digital platforms.
- Independently corrects basic and complex grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and syntax errors; Performs edits that improve overall writing quality of communications and achieve communication goals.
- Writes and reviews own and others' content to ensure grammar, quality, tone, and voice are appropriate and brand-compliant.
- Optimizes content for search engines.
- Plans, develops, and publishes communications initiated by the Office of Communications and Digital Strategy. Example communications include, but are not limited to, division news releases, feature stories, and e-newsletters.
- Manages central social media accounts and strategy for the divisions.
- Provides consult and resources to division units independently managing their own social media accounts.
- Supervises and manages student interns to support writing, editing, and social media needs.
- Hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and manages the work of each intern.
- Plans and conducts team-specific and whole office intern meetings, celebrations, and recognition programs.
- Represents the division's content landscape across the university by partnering with other university groups, teams, and committees and maintain active participation in relevant communities of practice.
- Participates in professional development opportunities and stay updated on emerging technologies, tools, and strategies within specialty area.
- Shares and extends knowledge within office and across divisions.
General Responsibilities
- Writes and edits clear, informative written content for various communications needs, audiences, and publication formats, assessing for relevance, accuracy, and appropriateness; tailors the degree of copyediting to a project's specific needs.
- Independently corrects basic and complex grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and syntax errors and performs edits that improve overall writing quality of communications and ensure alignment with university mission, strategies, objectives, and brand and accessibility guidelines.
- Performs reviews of peer writing to ensure grammar, quality, tone, and level of depth are sufficient; may also review against requirements for specific publications, including content, length, brand guidelines, and deadline specifications.
- Regularly consults with writers, printers, faculty, staff, and/or other stakeholders to ensure adherence to writing and publications deadlines.
- Identifies user and audience needs and analyzes usage of existing content in order to identify content gaps; plans, develops, and publishes internal and external communications.
- Drafts sample communications to be reviewed with manager at project deadline checkpoints.
- May provide guidance to other Writing/Editing Specialists.

EDUCATION
Required
- Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, public relations, or related field

Working Conditions / Demands
This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

$50,000 - $54,500 per year based on experience
