Job Summary

We are seeking a motivated, laser-focused computational geneticist or network biologist for a role on our computational genomics team. The team is building a novel platform to leverage human genetics data to identify therapeutically important cell types and signaling pathways in our proprietary transcriptomics data. The group is applying recent breakthroughs in proteomics, next-generation sequencing, network biology, and computational genomics, in order to map the genetic correlates of disease discovered from Genome Wide Association Studies (GWASs) onto a comprehensive biological network representing the gut-brain axis. Statistical enrichment of genetic association in submodules of the network will implicate specific signaling pathways in human disease. Successful candidates for this role will have a strong background in both computer science and biology, together with the personal and technical skills required to contribute to a large, focused software engineering effort. Candidates should have a track record of developing or improving state-of-the-art computational methods, paired with experience working collaboratively on a shared codebase with other computational scientists or engineers. The ability to transition from academics to industry is a paramount requirement. The successful candidate will be a team player, whose ideas and contributions are focused on the team's specific objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work on a small, highly collaborative team to develop software for a shared codebase that
    implements the human genetics data mining strategy
  • Critically assess current state-of-the-art methods in computational genomics and/or
    systems biology; stay abreast of new developments
  • Generate novel ideas to improve the data mining strategy or the speed with which we
    implement it
  • Contribute to internal communication efforts, to describe the team's computational
    strategy and the relevant underlying biology to stakeholders across the firm
  • Participate in code reviews (as both reviewer and author); software deployment and
    maintenance; iteration planning and timeline estimation; and software design discussions

Qualifications and Education Requirements

You must have:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Genomics, or Computational Systems Biology
  • Experience working collaboratively on a shared scientific codebase
  • Extraordinary self-motivation, focus, and diligence
  • >5 years of programming experience in C++, Python, and/or R
  • Commitment to rigor, in both quantitative analysis and software development
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (the role requires communicating about complex biological and computational issues)
  • A sophisticated understanding of biochemistry, cellular biology, and genetics
