If you're looking to build a strong foundation in cardiac care while making a difference in patients’ lives, the Cardiac Technician (CT) role offers an exciting and rewarding opportunity. In this position, you'll support nurses and physicians in providing specialized care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Your responsibilities will include monitoring cardiac rhythms, performing and analyzing 12-lead EKGs, assisting with telemetry, and supporting patients with their daily care needs. This role blends technical skill with hands-on patient interaction, giving you the chance to learn advanced monitoring techniques while playing an essential part in a collaborative care team.

Ideal for individuals with a CNA background, healthcare experience, or students who have completed clinical rotations, this role offers the chance to expand your knowledge of cardiac care in a real-world setting. Full-time, Part-time, and PRN candidates must be ready to commit to full-time hours (3 12hr shifts, 7a-7:30p) during the first 6-8 weeks for orientation.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required

Previous experience and CNA License preferred

Obtain BLS Certification by the end of the orientation period. Maintain BLS certification. Certifies in Basic EKG with 80% score or greater so may flex in Monitor Tech role as required by unit population .

A PCA/tech may be asked to assist in a patient safety assistant role while maintaining PCA/tech duties for that assigned patient.

Basic medical terminology knowledge preferred

Skill and proficiency in oral and written grammar, communication and basic mathematics.

Completion of education department rhythm recognition class within 1 year of assignment to monitor technician role.

Effective June 12, 2016 employees hired into this position must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Patient Care Technician/Assistnat with comparable experience in a healthcare setting, or have completed at least one med/surg hospital nurse rotation

Completion of a Basic 6 week EKG class with a minimum score of 80% or better on final exam, allowing for potential flex in Monitor Tech role a minimum of three shifts per scheduling period (per needs of unit). Required within 1 year of hire.

Completion of 48 hours training at monitor station with preceptor

Optional completion of Advanced arrhythmia, pacer, 12 lead EKG, and Pediatric EKG classes

Completion of the organization, unit and job specific competencies within a reasonable orientation period

BLS certification required by the end of the core orientation period, and maintaining while employed

  • Basic medical terminology preferred
  • Able to read and interpret data from equipment and computers
  • Ability to gather data and set appropriate plan of action, in coordination with RN, and within the scope of the PCA role
  • Ability to rotate to other areas within cluster group
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and through writing with patients, visitors and all members of the healthcare team.
  • Must be able to comfortably accept delegation and negotiate task priorities.

Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.

Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.

  • Monitors rhythms, sets alarm parameters as directed by nurse or physician, performs arrhythmia analysis.
  • Documents cardiac rhythm strips, rhythm changes and communicates with nurses (e.g. parameter changes).
  • Communicates with nursing units regarding changes in patient telemetry status.
  • Initiates, discontinues, and completes troubleshooting of telemetry on patients.
  • Performs 12-lead EKGs as directed
  • Monitors battery life on equipment and informs unit staff if batteries need changing (unit routines are every 24 hours
  • Communicates changes in pulse ox regularly to Registered Nurse or Respiratory Therapist

General Patient Care Assistant duties:

  • Provides information, direction, and assistance as appropriate to persons entering the unit.
  • Communicates with the RN regarding patient status, interventions completed, data collected and pertinent input to facilitate care planning
  • Answers signal lights, bells, or intercom system to determine patients' needs.
  • Bathes, dresses, and undresses patients.
  • Properly prepares patients for Open Heart i.e. Betadine bath, shave prep etc
  • Serves and collects food trays and feeds patients requiring help.
  • Reviews clinical pathways at beginning of shift and PRN for every assigned patient
  • Accompanies patients for diagnostic tests and discharge and/or assists patients walk
  • Turns and repositions bedfast patients, alone or with assistance, to prevent bedsores.
  • Changes bed linens, runs errands, directs visitors, and answers telephone.
  • Takes and records demographic information, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration rates, and food and fluid intake and output, and calorie counts, as directed.
  • Monitors patient status and documents specific vital sign information post sheath removal
  • Utilizes computer systems to acquire needed supplies and to enter patient data, as defined by role.
  • Provides skilled technical care according to unit-specific and generic structure standards, protocols and procedures, prescribed medical interventions, and nursing guidelines.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly environment, ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times
  • Accurately documents all care given
  • Assumes responsibility for own growth and development; attends regular staff meetings.
