The Rapid City Journal is seeking a managing editor that can take an excellent newsroom operation to the next level. The editor will lead and mentor an enthusiastic and talented staff dedicated to telling the community’s stories, from breaking news to big local events, from in-depth series and profiles to special projects, in new, creative and collaborative ways. The Journal enjoys strong relationships with and support from many key local partners and institutions, and the editor will have regular opportunities to continue building those relationships and discovering new ways for the Journal to serve the community.
The successful candidate will have experience leading a newsroom, managing employees, developing talent, planning daily coverage and weekend packages, and most of all -- editing great stories. The candidate will be knowledgeable in media law, uphold the highest journalism and ethical standards, be able to make sound decisions, and support the First Amendment through watchdog reporting. The position also requires ability to oversee and execute enterprise packages that work in multiple print and online formats. The candidate must be self-motivated, ready to lead others, and have a passion for local news.
