The ICCT seeks a highly motivated and committed Managing Editor who provides accurate, timely, research publications that inform effective clean transportation policy at the heart of the ICCT’s work. Our editorial team plays a central role in that by working with researchers, reviewers, program leaders, and others to keep our extensive publications portfolio moving. The ICCT’s Managing Editor leads the editorial team and is responsible for ensuring the integrity and efficiency of the ICCT’s publications process at every stage.
The Managing Editor collaborates with ICCT staff members at all levels to proactively manage the ICCT’s publications portfolio. That means, in part, helping to prioritize publications to appropriately expedite and resource key organizational projects. That also includes managing the workflows and workloads of the editorial team to ensure that the right team members are working on the right projects at the right times, keeping the ICCT’s priority projects on track. And, perhaps most importantly, that strategic focus also includes continuously analyzing and optimizing the steps in the ICCT’s editorial process – the Managing Editor’s overarching goal is to maximize the efficiency of that process without compromising quality. This is a full-time position is based in our Washington, DC office and will report to the Communications Director.
You will:
- Oversee, analyze, and optimize the steps in the ICCT’s editorial process to maximize efficiency and control quality.
- Collaborate with researchers, project managers, and others to plan, prioritize, and produce publications.
- Manage the workflows and workloads of the editorial team (including freelancer editors) to ensure they meet deadlines, maintain quality standards, and meet organizational objectives.
- Oversee the editorial team’s work products to ensure publications consistently meet editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, authorial voice, and timeliness.
- Guide, coach, and mentor the editorial team and other ICCT staff members on ICCT publication and editorial standards.
- Review products for quality and provide constructive feedback for improvement.
- Maintain the ICCT’s editorial guidelines and train ICCT staff members on writing and editing best practices.
- Regularly analyze and report on the status of items in the publications pipeline.
- Ensure parallel processes and products (e.g., engagement and outreach activities and materials) are integrated and coordinated with the publications process.
- Write and edit ICCT publications.
You Have:
- Ability to lead and manage teams by assessing workflows and workloads and setting work priorities.
- Ability to analyze, manage, and optimize publications processes (including by using digital tools like publications management platforms).
- Knowledge of editorial and publications best practices (including modern style and editorial conventions and standards) and the ability to mentor, coach, and train others on the application of those standards.
- Superior writing, editing, and research skills and the ability to mentor, coach, and train others on those skills.
- Ability to understand and synthesize technical information and translate it for multiple audiences differentiated across platforms.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with researchers, editors, managers, and other staff and the ability to help team members foster and maintain relationships.
- Ability to collaborate with teams, present creative concepts, and incorporate feedback.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines by prioritizing work.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience working in the nonprofit sector.
- Knowledge of the transportation sector and issues related to clean transportation.
- Knowledge of the environmental sector and climate/environmental policy issues.
Our Benefits
This position will be based out of our Washington, DC office on a hybrid schedule with a compensation of $118,000/ year.
