The ASL Interpreter plays a vital role in ensuring effective communication and accessibility for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals within the Ivy Tech Community College community. This position provides high-quality interpreting services for signed and spoken discourse in academic and non-academic settings, including classrooms, meetings, interviews, and campus events. Candidates must be able to demonstrate fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, possess a thorough knowledge of the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, and possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. This role operates on an as-needed basis. Each semester a weekly schedule will be established based on student needs and their course schedules. This role requires flexibility to be able to support their overall success.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpreting services for Ivy Tech students, staff, faculty, and campus guests across various college settings.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and foster inclusive communication environments.
  • Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials and consulting with the DSS Director and Interpreter Coordinator.
  • Interpret a variety of discourse, accommodating clients with diverse communication styles and language modalities.
  • Evaluate client communication needs and adjust interpreting style to ensure clarity and effectiveness.
  • Maintain accurate and timely submission of work hours in the college’s time reporting system.
  • Communicate professionally with all college stakeholders.
  • Complete required Ivy Lead training modules promptly.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in a related field or a minimum of three (3) years of professional interpreting experience.
  • Demonstrated fluency in both ASL and English.
  • National or state certification in ASL interpreting or evidence of active progress toward certification (employment contingent upon successful certification).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field.

Additional Requirements:

  • Official transcripts and/or relevant certifications must be submitted at the time of hire.
  • Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
  • Must be able to travel to the Kosciusko County site located in Warsaw, IN or other service area locations as needed.
