Are you looking for your next challenge in the Power industry? At Balfour Beatty, we’re on the lookout for a Substations Protection & Control (P&C) Design Discipline Lead to join our team. In this key role, you’ll lead and grow a talented team of engineers, working on exciting projects that help power communities and infrastructure across the UK and beyond.

The main function of this role is the management and leadership of the Protection & Control design delivery team, ensuring the team is equipped, motivated, and aligned to deliver high-quality design services for our projects across the UK.

As the Design Discipline Lead, you will provide clear strategy, leadership, and direction to the team, creating a supportive and proactive culture that champions collaboration, shared learning, cross-boundary engagement, and the recognition of success. Your leadership will drive the development and performance of our people, shaping a team that consistently meets both current and future project demands.

What you'll be doing

What You’ll Be Doing

As the Substations P&C Design Discipline Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role by:

• Driving Team Success: Strategically managing and leading the team, ensuring collaboration across multiple UK offices and our Engineering Design Centre (EDC). Fostering a culture of teamwork, shared learning, and recognition of success.
• Resource Management: Ensuring the team is equipped with competent and skilled staff to deliver high-quality designs that meet current and future project demands.
• Project Performance: Overseeing workload allocation, P&L accountability, and ensuring design activities run efficiently. Tracking productivity, optimising processes, and maintaining technical excellence across all projects.
• Support Across Project Phases: Working closely with stakeholders to nominate lead designers, ensure accurate tender inputs, and support project delivery plans with realistic budget estimates and risk management.
• Develop Leadership Excellence: Creating and implementing succession plans while focusing on team development and technical competency, ensuring growth at every level within your discipline.
• Client and Stakeholder Collaboration: Building and maintaining strong relationships across the business with clients, project delivery teams, and business leaders, contributing to shared goals and delivering excellence.

Who we're looking for

You don’t need to meet every requirement to apply! If you have a passion for engineering and project delivery, we’d love to hear from you. However, you’ll ideally bring:

• Experience in Protection & Control design or the wider power engineering field.
• A background in engineering – e.g., Degree/HND/HNC in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• Strong project delivery and leadership skills, with the ability to support and inspire others.
• Excellent communication and collaborative working skills.
• A proactive mindset, aligned with Balfour Beatty’s values, to foster equality, drive innovative outcomes, and ensure safety and quality are never compromised.
