Temporary Assistant Editor, WNYC and Gothamist

The WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for an enterprising and detail-oriented Assistant Editor to join our Day-of desk for at least three months starting in June. This Assistant Editor is a versatile player-coach – a journalist who can assign, edit and occasionally report on stories. This person plays an integral role on one of the newsroom’s largest teams, which drives our daily and breaking news coverage.

The Assistant Editor will also assist the Day-of desk’s role as the final editor for all stories published to the web — ensuring stories are written clearly and comprehensively and adhere to WNYC and Gothamist’s style, as well as our ethical and journalistic standards.

The journalist in this role will have strong reporting skills and creative, engaging ideas. The Assistant Editor will take on editing assignments, delegated by the Senior Editor of the Day-of desk, and regularly collaborate with other desks and teams on relevant breaking news coverage.

The Assistant Editor upholds the highest standards of journalistic quality and integrity, ensuring that our journalism is engaging, timely, accurate, clear, thorough, fair, and impactful.

This role reports into the Senior Editor of the Day-of News team and has a Monday-Friday schedule with a 6:30 a.m.-2 p.m. shift. This role will oversee breaking news coverage for both our on-air and digital audiences. This editor may be asked to work occasional weekends or holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and assign the early-morning breaking news reporter and collaborate with the Morning Show production team
  • Evangelize and uphold the strategic vision and goals for the Day-of desk
  • Take on editing assignments from the Senior Editor of the Day-of desk
  • Create engaging journalism that attracts loyal and diverse audiences in digital, on-air, on-demand audio and social
  • Hold all content to the highest journalistic standards — from breaking news to longform features
  • Help mentor and coach reporters on the desk through pitches and edits
  • Assist the Day-of Editor with organizing daily and long-term coverage planning
  • Collaborate with peers and partners across the organization on relevant content and projects
  • Foster a culture of accountability, creativity and innovation in storytelling

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years professional journalism experience, including some experience editing as well as experience writing on deadline
  • Ability to lead, inspire, manage and convey knowledge/feedback to a team of reporters
  • Ability to conceive and execute innovative approaches to storytelling with a demonstrated ability to see the story that’s going to engage readers and to anticipate reader interests
  • Deft writing and editing skills, including the ability to sharpen or rewrite copy with grammatical and style precision under immediate deadline pressure
  • Sophisticated communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking
  • Deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalism; and impeccable journalistic integrity and judgment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issues
  • Self-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checking
  • Ability to manage several projects concurrently
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in newsrooms

Additional Information

This is a temporary full-time role with a weekly rate of $1,730.76 - $1,826.92/week (annualized at $90K-95K). This role is also eligible for medical, dental and vision insurance through SAG-AFTRA and sick time.

This role is currently operating in a hybrid capacity, with the ability to sometimes work from home. However, this position is part of the NYC staff and will be expected to work from the NYC office on specified days with regularity.
