Duties 

The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz) welcomes applications for the role of Technical Director in our Department of Theatre Arts. The Technical Director facilitates the department’s ambitious production season and works collaboratively with the faculty and students. This role manages, supervises, and maintains the scene shop as well as Parker and McKenna Theaters ensuring OSHA, SUNY Health and Safety, and Broadway Green Alliance Guidelines are being met. The Technical Director oversees the technical requirements of production: carpentry, rigging, etc; budgets and builds sets for the mainstage season in conjunction with the design team; and hires and supervises a student labor force for scenic, lighting, and sound in collaboration of head lighting and sound designers. The candidate will be responsible for attendance at production meetings, technical rehearsals, and strikes.

The Technical Director teaches two sections of THE252 ‘Introduction to Theatre Production’ each semester and mentors students through independent study credits as assigned.

Additionally, they are a departmental liaison with the Dean’s Office. The candidate will manage the department’s production calendar and internal calendar for theatre spaces, and coordinate with internal department/student organizations and community organizations who may rent theatre space. This includes hiring, training, and supervising a student assistant crew to staff all non-departmental events in Parker and McKenna Theaters.

QualificationsRequired:

  • BS, BA, or BFA is required
  • Significant professional and/or educational experience in a similar role, including proven experience translating design ideas into clear and accurate technical drawings in Vectorworks or Auto Cad.

Preferred:

  • MFA in Technical Direction or similar field
