The Archdiocese of Chicago Catholic schools serve more than 40,000 students in 150+ elementary and high schools in Cook and Lake counties. The St. Viator Elementary School Athletic Director is responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and administration of the school’s interscholastic sports programs. This position serves as the key liaison between coaches, parents, students, and the school administration and is accountable for ensuring that the athletic program aligns with the school’s educational mission, values, and student development goals.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Oversight & Leadership

  • Serve as a liaison between coaches, parents, student-athletes, school staff, and administrators to ensure clear, effective communication.
  • Develop and maintain a local athletic handbook (following the Archdiocese of Chicago “Handbook for Athletic Directors) outlining the program philosophy, academic and behavior expectations for student-athletes, and codes of conduct for coaches, parents, and volunteers.
  • Clearly communicate the athletic program’s philosophy to all stakeholders and ensure consistent adherence.

Coach & Volunteer Management

  • Set and enforce criteria for the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and ongoing monitoring of all coaches.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and supervise all program volunteers, including assistants, scorekeepers, and event staff.
  • Ensure all coaches and volunteers adhere to safety guidelines and conduct expectations.

Team & League Coordination

  • Determine school participation in athletic leagues and serve as the school’s representative in league meetings.
  • Make decisions regarding team formation based on registration numbers, player eligibility, and skill levels.
  • Decide athlete eligibility for participation in multiple sports during a single season in alignment with school policy.

Scheduling & Event Planning

  • Develop and coordinate practice, game, and tournament schedules with the Athletics Association Board Members and Volunteers.
  • Communicate all schedules to coaches, parents, and relevant school staff in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of all athletic events and ensure adequate staffing and supervision.

Financial Management

  • Prepare and present an annual budget for the athletic program for approval by the Principal. AD will collaborate with the Athletics Association Board Treasurer.
  • Set and manage participation fees and ensure expenditures comply with local fiscal
  • guidelines.
  • Submit timely and accurate financial reports to the Principal and/or Pastor.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Establish, communicate, and enforce standards of safety for all athletic activities and facilities.
  • Develop and disseminate an Emergency Plan for unplanned events or injuries during practices or games.
  • Collaborate with the Sergeant at Arms Board Member to support the Rec Center Safety and Risk Management.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest and background in athletics and youth development.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Experience in education, coaching, or athletic program administration is preferred.
  • Availability during after-school hours and weekends as needed.

Evaluation:

The Principal will regularly evaluate the Athletic Director’s effectiveness in fulfilling all responsibilities outlined above, based on performance metrics, stakeholder feedback, and program outcomes.

This part time position has a yearly salary of $10,000.00. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on many factors including but not limited to: relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
