Overview

The Urban Systems Lab (USL) at NYU is seeking a creative and detail-oriented UX/UI Designer to lead user experience and interface design for data-driven platforms that advance climate resilience and urban adaptation. A significant focus of this role will be supporting the design and development of ClimateIQ, an interactive dashboard and hazard assessment tool that helps planners and communities assess and act on climate risk. The designer will collaborate with researchers, engineers, and user researchers to develop intuitive, visually engaging, and user-tested interfaces that communicate complex spatial and scientific data. The ideal candidate has experience designing mapping dashboards or working with geospatial data and is passionate about science communication and public impact.

Responsibilities

  • Lead UX/UI design for the ClimateIQ platform, focusing on map-based dashboards and geospatial visualization.
  • Collaborate with user researchers (UXR) to plan, conduct, and respond to user testing and feedback.
  • Work closely with engineering (especially the USL geospatial data engineer to translate design concepts into functional components.
  • Design interactive visualizations, graphics, and user flows that communicate complex data in accessible ways.
  • Support broader USL design needs, including map products, static and interactive graphics, and science communication tools for research reports, websites, and publications.
  • Help maintain consistency across Lab products through the development of design systems and style guides.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience in UX/UI design, with a strong portfolio of mapping dashboards or spatial data interfaces.
  • Proficiency in design tools (Figma, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Framer, etc.) and familiarity with web technologies (HTML/CSS/JS).
  • Familiarity with frontend UI component libraries (e.g., MUI, Carbon Components)
  • Experience working with geospatial data and tools (e.g., Mapbox, Leaflet, deck.gl, ArcGIS APIs).
  • Strong collaboration skills and experience working with cross-functional teams (engineering, research, UXR).
  • Excellent visual design, data visualization and storytelling skills, with a commitment to accessibility and clarity.
