Job Description

The Senior Architectural Design Manager will join the Program Management team executing the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Capital Improvement Program and work directly under the direction of the Director of Architecture for the Department of Aviation Planning & Development department.

The role is focused on reviewing, coordinating, and managing the architectural design efforts led by on-call consultants, ensuring that all submittals meet quality, code, and programmatic standards for airport development.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design review process for architectural submittals on new construction and renovation projects, ensuring technical accuracy and adherence to applicable codes, standards, and airport guidelines.
  • Evaluate and verify consultant deliverables for conformance with project scope, budget, schedule, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Provide code analysis (including IBC, NFPA, and ADA) and design guidance to internal stakeholders and consultant teams.
  • Perform quality assurance reviews on consultant designs and tenant design submittals.
  • Maintain documentation of design comments and decisions to ensure traceability and project clarity.
  • Support the construction administration process by responding to RFIs, conducting field reviews, and participating in punch list inspections.
  • Perform building condition assessments and prepare reports to support renovation or upgrade projects.
  • Serve as a technical resource to other departments and external stakeholders related to design and code matters.

Supervision Received:

  • Operates with minimal supervision and exercises a high degree of independence.
  • Direction is typically strategic and outcome-oriented with periodic collaboration with senior staff and the Director of Architecture.

Decision Making:

  • Makes recommendations and decisions on design compliance, quality, and coordination issues.
  • Responsible for technical interpretation of codes, standards, and contractual requirements related to architectural design.

Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Provides guidance to design consultants and internal teams.
  • Interfaces with engineers, project managers, construction managers, and stakeholders to support integrated project delivery.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of architectural design principles, methods, and industry best practices.
  • Strong understanding of relevant building codes including IBC, NFPA, and ADA.
  • Experience reviewing and coordinating construction documents across all design disciplines.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple design review packages across various stages of design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and Microsoft Office; familiarity with SketchUp and Bluebeam is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to shifting priorities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible experience in architectural design and/or design management roles, preferably on medium or large hub airport or complex commercial projects.

Licensure and Certifications:

  • Registered Architect license preferred but not required. (Georgia registration preferred or ability to obtain).

Work Environment:

  • In office five days a week
