Position Summary

As a Material Handler I, you will receive, store, withdraw, and ship various biological materials.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples or clinical agents for pickups, courier deliveries, and shipments.
  • Collaborate closely with managers to support customer inquiries, discrepancies, inventory maintenance, and database updates.
  • Apply an inventory management system for data entry, sample tracking, and management.
  • Maintain files for validation of data, prepare queries, review accumulated data for accuracy, and generate reports.
  • Conduct internal specimen consolidation and reorganization projects under the mentorship of higher level Operations Technicians.
  • Engage in process improvement activities.
  • Receive, handle, and inventory specimens of human, animal, and plant origin at temperatures ranging from ambient to -196°C, with potentially hazardous properties.
  • Ensure compliance with cGMP parts 210 and 211 and company quality systems.
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs), facility safety guidelines, and FDA requirements.

  • Prepare sample collection kits as needed.
  • Make deliveries to clients as required.
  • Travel to other facilities to meet business needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Minimum Qualifications

  • Proven ability to communicate effectively verbally and in written form.
  • Expert ability to prepare reports using Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to learn, navigate, and operate in various database environments.
  • Knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Word, and possibly Microsoft Access.

Education/Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • Prefer work experience with data entry, shipping/receiving, or sample management.

Certificates and/or Licenses

  • IATA Dangerous Goods Training for Class 6.2 Shipping.
  • Blood Borne Pathogens Training.

Work Schedule

  • 8AM to 4:30PM core hours with additional hours as required.

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in a cold environment with exposure to dry ice, liquid nitrogen cryogenics, hazardous and infectious agents, and marked temperature changes.
  • May push/pull 600 lb liquid nitrogen dewars and work from a platform ladder.
  • Must use personal protective equipment and adhere to safety protocols.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and push up to 70 lbs.
  • Must handle materials frozen on dry ice (-78°C) or liquid nitrogen (-196°C) for up to 6 hours per day.
  • Must work in walk-in freezers or refrigerators periodically for up to 5 hours per day.
  • Must use a computer for up to 6 hours per day.
  • May operate a forklift.

Compensation and Benefits

The hourly pay range estimated for this position based in Maryland is $13.82–$20.73.
