Sr Instrument and Controls Designer

Location: Houston, TX - 77042 - Onsite

Position Summary

We are looking for an experienced I&C Designer to develop and support comprehensive instrumentation and control system design packages for an industrial facility. This role requires expertise in preparing construction-ready documentation, including panel layouts, loop diagrams, PLC designs, and cable routing plans. The designer will lead design reviews, conduct field verifications, and coordinate closely with internal teams and external engineering firms to ensure alignment with project standards and refinery requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare complete control system design packages, including:
    • Panel layout and termination drawings
    • Instrument index, loop diagrams, and block diagrams
    • PLC and Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) design
    • Fiber optic layout and cable tray routing
    • Instrument specifications and installation details
  • Conduct onsite field walkdowns to validate scope and existing conditions
  • Lead and actively participate in drawing reviews at all project stages
  • Create and manage drawings using AutoCAD, following client-specific standards
  • Collaborate with external engineering firms by:
    • Providing reference documentation
    • Reviewing submittals for compliance with client requirements
    • Ensuring proper delivery and documentation of final design packages

Required Experience and Skills

  • 10+ years lead experience (I&C Design)
  • Understanding of overall instrument installation and design principles for field measurement and process controls
  • Knowledge of Distributed Control Systems including but not limited to Honeywell Experion PKS platform
  • Knowledge of Safety Systems including but not limited to Honeywell Safety Manager and Triconex systems
  • Experience with PLC’s for monitoring and control of packaged systems
  • Knowledge with network infrastructures and fiber optic installations
  • Define scope and deliverables for assigned work
  • Work successfully in a team environment to accomplish project goals
  • Conduct field trips to facilities in order to develop scope and gather information for the project team
  • SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI INtools) experience a plus
