The Kentucky Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction, Division of Building Code Enforcement is seeking a Building Code Field Inspector III. This position is within the field operations branch and is responsible for reviewing plans and conducting inspections of new building construction including alterations, renovations, and buildings involved in a change of occupancy (use) to ensure compliance with adopted codes and referenced standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct all levels of inspections of new or substantially remodeled construction, including the most complex projects, to ensure compliance with building codes, referenced standards, and Departmental approved construction plans. Independently inspect in assigned territory. Consult with superintendents, construction managers, owners, and other officials concerning building construction.
  • Schedule inspections and prepare new construction inspection reports.
  • Research building codes and referenced standards to develop working knowledge of building codes.
  • Regularly work with local building officials, other field inspectors, and field supervisors.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Construction industry knowledge.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents.
  • Familiarity with building codes or the ability to develop knowledge of building codes.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of experience in drafting or preparing building construction documents or in the supervision of building construction, or hold a current certificate as a Kentucky Level II, or Level III Certified Building Inspector and have worked under that certification for two years or two years of experience as a state plan review or state plan inspector employed by the Department of Housing, Building, and Construction.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this job classification. Must hold and maintain valid certification for Level II (two) or Level III (three) building inspector issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction as defined in KRS 198B.090 and 815 KAR 7:070. Must complete twelve (12), department approved, Kentucky Inspector Certified Program Continuing Education unit credits per year. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Working Conditions

Travel will be required to perform inspections. May be exposed to hazards commonly associated with building construction, which requires the following of safety procedures.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
