Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University Museum combines The Textile Museum’s collection of approximately 25,000 global textiles with the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana collection documenting the establishment of Washington, DC as a national capital. Exhibitions and educational programs take place at the public museum on 21st and G Streets, supported by a state-of-the-art collections care facility on GW’s Ashburn Campus. The museum is committed to academic engagement by supporting classes and research, as well as by hiring of students for museum work. The museum is AAM accredited.
Reporting to the Senior Curator for Exhibitions, the Exhibitions Coordinator provides administrative support for internally generated and traveling exhibitions hosted by The George Washington University Museum and The Textile Museum. Core responsibilities of this position include establishing workflow schedules; developing and tracking exhibition budgets; and acting as a liaison with outside contributors and vendors involved in exhibition planning, development, and production.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Exhibitions:
- Assist in establishing and overseeing workflow schedules and personnel strategies for exhibition production and de/installation to assure the timely and effective implementation of the exhibition program;
- Research exhibition materials, furniture, and services, and identify suppliers;
- Draft Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for exhibition-related services and materials, review submissions and contracts, and ensure contract compliance;
- Liaise with graphic designers, printers, and suppliers of custom exhibition products and establish their milestones, timelines, and work schedules;
- In collaboration with the Senior Curator for Exhibitions, prepare and oversee individual exhibition budgets and establish long-term, cross-departmental budgets and spending projections for exhibition programming;
- Research and implement technology solutions for exhibition-related computer interactives and AV experiences;
- Facilitate communication between guest curators and museum staff;
- Assist the Exhibition Production team during the installation and take-down of exhibitions;
- Assist Senior Curator for Exhibitions in accessing, organizing, and improving efficiencies of exhibition planning and implementation procedures.
Administration:
- Support institutional long-term planning and fundraising efforts related to exhibitions;
- Compile and maintain exhibition documents and provide information to the museum staff as necessary;
- Maintain an archival record of all exhibitions presented at the museum;
- Make travel arrangements for curators, guest curators, and others;
- Give tours and guest lectures for GW classes as needed;
- Participate in Exhibitions Task Force;
- Handle objects and assist with photo shoots as needed;
- Schedule exhibition-related meetings as needed, prepare documents and minutes;
- Manage day-to-day tasks for Exhibitions Student Assistant.
- This position may include an opportunity to serve as the instructor of record for a university course during normal business hours. The opportunity shall be mutually agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which governs wages, benefits, and working conditions.
Other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning additional responsibilities that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication;
- A self-starter with the ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment with concurrent deadlines and rapidly changing priorities;
- Proficiency in industry-specific knowledge and skills related to exhibition development, planning, production and implementation; knowledge of industry-standards for contracts and agreements; understanding of museum standards and practices are desired;
- Proficiency in the use of PM tools and in the application and development of PM processes and procedures; exceptional time management, project management, and organizational skills; detail-oriented, with exceptional organizational skills; ability to prioritize, manage, and multitask; ability to coordinate complex schedules and analyze and solve problems;
- Working knowledge of professional photo editing and design programs such as Photoshop, Adobe In Design, Adobe Illustrator, and a high level of computer literacy to source and use industry-specific software for interactive kiosks, databases, etc.; familiarity with museum interactive technology and AV equipment are desired;
- Familiarity with grant process preferred; experience in a nonprofit or higher education setting a plus, as well as a willingness to work non-traditional business hours on occasion;
- Interest in the arts, foreign cultures, and languages.
Hiring Range $53,719 - $67,654.90
