Job Description

The academic advisor plays a vital role in supporting the academic success of a cohort of both full-time and online graduate students in the Whitman School of Management. This position provides comprehensive academic advising which includes program planning, course selection, clarifying academic rules and regulations, ensuring timely degree completion including the support of retention efforts, and promoting opportunities to enhance the student experience. This role requires a strong commitment to student support, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team. Academic advisors will be expected to work with adult professional learners pursuing their degrees part-time, students from around the world, and a diverse group of students pursuing their MBA or one of a variety of MS programs.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree with 2-3 years of experience in academic advising at the college-level is preferred.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, excellent technical skills (examples include PeopleSoft, DegreeWorks, Salesforce, Zoom, and database programs).
  • Strong detail orientation and excellent organizational skills required.
  • Must be collegial and able to deal with potentially stressful situations.
  • Prior experience working in advising is highly desirable.
  • Proactiveness, proclivity for solving problems and ability to display a customer-orientation are desirable.
  • Must be highly comfortable working with students of different backgrounds, including working professionals and international students.

Responsibilities

  • Advise students in specific curricular decisions including the choice and scheduling of courses, concentration and other degree requirements, registrar/bursar policies, academic integrity, and helping students achieve their academic and professional objectives. Advising sessions are almost exclusively one-on-one with some group sessions on occasion such as during new student orientation. Assigned portfolio of students will include both main campus and online programs studying their MBA or MS programs. Advising sessions will be both in-person and remote to accommodate students.
  • Oversee all administrative tasks associated with assigned students including semester degree checks, degree certifications, course registration, athletic certifications, and maintaining advising records.
  • Utilize campus-wide software and additional technology platforms to track academic progress, degree completion and communicate with students and faculty regarding student success.
  • Understand, interpret, and provide rationale for SU and Whitman academic policies and procedures to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Promote and engage in co-curricular involvement on campus including but not limited to new student orientation, community-building activities, and onboarding processes.
  • May be asked to meet with prospective students on occasion.
