Job Summary

The Program Manager for Palliative Medicine will collaborate closely with the Section Head to advance the goals and objectives of the palliative care section. The Program Manager will be an integral part of the section and will be responsible for working with minimal supervision. They are expected to think critically, exercise independent judgment, and contribute significantly to the operations of the section. This position reports directly to the Division Administrator of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine.

Responsibilities*

Section Head Support:

  • Serve as the administrative lead providing operational management to the Section Head.
  • Provide expertise and consultation to Section Head as it relates to operational effectiveness, patient access, financial management, data analysis,
  • employee engagement, and patient satisfaction.
  • Provide leadership for the effective management of change and transition within the Section and institution.
  • Support Section Head to develop section goals, initiatives, management reports, ongoing performance improvement and dashboards to align with patient
  • and family experience.
  • Collaborate with Palliative Care leadership, including Education/Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship, Veterans Administration Palliative Care,
  • Palliative Care Inpatient Beds, Pharmacy and Research.
  • Responsibilities related to faculty recruitment, performance, management, and Office of Faculty Affairs requirements.

Clinical Operations:

  • Lead outpatient monthly meeting of providers and clinic staff.
  • Engage in operations oversight role to support Palliative Care providers across 5 clinic locations. Oversee and analyze clinic workflow optimization including referral management within MiChart to identify opportunities and provide feedback on operational issues.

Communication:

  • Lead for Palliative Care SharePoint site.
  • Act as a liaison for Section Head to cultivate mutually beneficial relationships to leverage subspecialty expertise across the institution (e.g., PM&R).
  • Lead monthly Development Strategy meeting of development officers, development finance and compliance.

Financial:

  • Responsible for communicating performance metrics regularly to providers and staff for inpatient service and outpatient clinics.
  • Identify, communicate, share, and present operational, performance, and financial metrics and best practices to Section Head, Division Administrator, and Hospital Leadership.

Faculty Support:

  • Provide administrative support to Palliative Care program providers and staff.

Required Qualifications*

  • 3-5 years of progressive project or program management experience in healthcare settings, preferably within palliative care or an academic environment.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks efficiently. Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in data analysis, budget management, maintenance, and reconciliation, with attention to financial details.
  • Strong understanding of unique needs and operations of palliative care programs.
  • Proven track record in fostering collaboration between diverse stakeholders, including academic and industry partners.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Ability and desire to work independently, showing initiative, as well as participating collaboratively within a team setting.

Work Schedule

  • Standard business hours, Monday-Friday

  • Primarily remote work
  • Some onsite days required

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
