In this position...

This isn't your average technician role! While you'll still be hands-on with prototype vehicles, you'll operate at a higher technical level, bridging the gap between mechanical/electrical work and complex vehicle software/system diagnostics. You'll be critical in supporting the development and debugging of cutting-edge EV technology, working closely with engineering teams to bring new features to life and troubleshoot intricate issues.

What you'll do...

  • Perform complex assembly, modification, maintenance, and repair tasks on prototype vehicles systems (including electrical, mechanical, thermal, and propulsion systems).
  • Lead technical issue triage and debugging efforts for complex vehicle problems, focusing on interactions between hardware and software components.
  • Utilize advanced diagnostic tools and software, including CAN analysis tools (like CANalyzer, Vehicle Spy), to analyze vehicle data, identify root causes of issues, and verify fixes.
  • Execute vehicle software flashing, configuration updates, and module programming as required during the development process.
  • Support vehicle bring-up activities for new prototype builds, system integrations, and major software releases, ensuring basic functionality and connectivity.
  • Collaborate closely with Software, Calibration, Integration, and Test Engineers to understand technical issues, provide detailed feedback, and implement solutions.
  • Fabricate or modify complex parts and components as needed to support prototype development and issue resolution.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate technical records of work performed, including modifications, diagnostic findings, software versions, and issue resolution steps.
  • Assist in developing and refining technical procedures for prototype assembly, advanced diagnostics, software updates, and vehicle bring-up.
  • Support vehicle testing activities by preparing vehicles, installing instrumentation, and providing on-the-spot technical diagnosis and repair during test sessions.
  • Ensure all work is performed safely and maintain a highly organized and clean work environment. Manage inventory of specialized parts, tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Potentially provide technical guidance or mentorship to junior technicians.

You'll have...

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as an automotive technician or in a related hands-on technical role, with significant experience working on prototype vehicles or in a research and development environment.
  • Proven ability to perform advanced vehicle diagnostics and troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, and software-related issues.
  • Strong proficiency in using a wide range of hand and power tools, fabrication equipment, and advanced electronic diagnostic tools, including CAN analysis software.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation (including software release notes or technical specifications).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured approach to diagnosing technical issues.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and work execution.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a lead member of a technical team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical issues to engineers and other team members.
  • Deep knowledge of vehicle systems, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and embedded control systems.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and diagnostic software applications.
  • Experience with vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, Ethernet).

Even better, you may have...

  • Associate's degree or technical certification in Automotive Technology, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • Extensive experience working specifically on Electric Vehicle (EV) prototypes.
  • Experience with specific diagnostic platforms, data logging tools, or issue tracking systems (e.g., Jira).
  • Familiarity with software development processes or automotive systems integration.
  • Experience supporting vehicle calibration or complex multi-domain system integration activities.
  • Experience with high-voltage vehicle systems.
