Job Title: Drafting/CAD Technician II

Location: Hickory, NC

Candidates must be able to commute and work onsite in Hickory, NC

Pay Rate: Based on experience

Work Hours: M–F, 8am–5pm

Education: AAS in Mechanical Technology or CAD

Description

Our client is seeking a Drafting/CAD Technician II to support engineers in the design, development, and documentation of mechanical systems and industrial automation equipment. This individual will provide mechanical drafting, 3D modeling, and documentation expertise using SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar CAD platforms. The role includes both in-office CAD work and periodic travel to project/plant locations for support and installation guidance.

Requirements:

  • Create and revise detailed drawings of mechanical components and systems using 2D and 3D CAD tools
  • Assist engineers with equipment design layouts and mechanical specifications
  • Produce and manage documentation packages including drawings, spare parts lists, SOPs, and specifications
  • Prepare assembly and detail drawings of mechanical systems and robotic tooling
  • Estimate time required for drafting tasks and meet project deadlines
  • Procure material and process equipment following company procedures
  • Communicate technical information clearly through drawings, documents, and oral instructions
  • Support the creation of training materials and conduct training as needed
  • Travel 20–30% to plant/vendor sites for installation and coordination

Required Qualifications

Education:

  • AAS in Mechanical Technology or Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of drafting/design experience in a related field
  • Proficient with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or AutoCAD
  • Experience with machine design, equipment layouts, and drafting standards (ANSI Y14.5)
  • Familiarity with safety standards (OSHA, ANSI, ISO) and machine guarding
  • Able to work independently on design tasks without daily oversight

Desired Skills:

  • Clear and professional communication with internal teams and vendors
  • Comfortable with hands-on work in prototyping, testing, and mechanical assembly
  • Familiarity with drawing repositories like EPDM
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment
  • Strong technical curiosity and mechanical aptitude

  • Positive, professional attitude with strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Respectful of diverse teams and inclusive environments
  • Self-starter who is actively engaged with project teams and objectives
