Overview
Responsible for the clinical and operational management of the Pediatric Emergency Department Nursing unit, ensuring that standards of practice for nursing and patient care are maintained; participates in developing departmental plans and programs as required; collects and provides data on unit activities, PI issues, etc. as required.
Responsibilities
1.* Participates in developing and implementing goals of assigned units and in evaluating progress toward the goals.
2.* Participates in selecting and hiring staff in unit; supervises unit staff, initiating disciplinary action, including terminations; carries out annual performance appraisal of employees recommending promotions, raises, etc.
3.* Responsible for unit staffing plan, developing work schedules for unit employees to ensure appropriate staffing levels and staffing mix are maintained; communicates staffing needs and scheduling requirements to appropriate clerical staff for implementation and follows up to ensure staffing is appropriate.
4.* Ensures safe and professional patient care by enforcing and monitoring compliance to professional standards, identifying clinical and educational needs of staff; recommends methods for improving staff competence and patient care and assists in developing, implementing and evaluating programs.
5.* Through meetings, in-services or other established means of communication, provides information to unit staff for therapeutic and effective patient care management; identifies and puts into place appropriate monitors of patient care delivery.
6.* Participates in the CQI process for unit by identifying patient care issues and assisting in implementing PI monitors.
7.* Investigates and follows through on all unit occurrences.
8.* Acts as liaison between unit, Nurse Manager and ancillary departments to resolve problems and ensure quality of patient care is maintained.
9.* Maintains departmental reports and records and collects statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes.
10.* Provides information to Nurse Manager to assist in developing departmental budgets; monitors budget performance of unit throughout the year; recommends methods to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness of unit operations.
11.* Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
12. Adheres to the Medical Center's policy on Conflict of Interest, which includes completion of a Conflict of Interest Certificate on an annual basis.
