Duties

Writer Editor duties include the following:

  • Writes, edits, develops, and improves OIG products that articulate, interpret, and explain highly complex, potentially controversial, and important current and proposed OIG programs. Ensures that substantive facts, issues, conclusions, and recommendations are presented and discussed in an appropriate manner. These products are often attributed to high-level Agency officials, and are used by Congress, agency policy makers, and the media.
  • Offers advice on proposed structure of the reports and documents to be prepared on early drafts.
  • Plans, develops, and manages the publication of organizational reports from initial concept. Selects the overall theme, solicits input and writes original materials.
  • Establishes and enforces a consistent set of style, grammar, format, and punctuation, sentence and paragraph structure practices that are applied to all documents throughout OIG. Prepares guidance on formatting, organization of reports, grammar principles, and other issues and potentially conduct informal and formal training to staff on writing standards. Conducts final reviews for of OIG products for style, design, layout, content and editorial aspects, including grammar before release.
  • Ensures that all publications are consistent with written standards, policies, and objectives of related subject matter programs.
  • Researches, gathers, and analyzes information using diverse sources, to write OIG products, conferring with OIG management and other Agency officials to obtain information to analyze both the subject and audience and present the material clearly, accurately, thoroughly, and convincingly, taking into consideration the most logical and effective narrative sequence, length, and tone based on objectives, medium and audience.

  • Knowledge of desktop/electronic publishing software and other electronic communication equipment.
  • Knowledge of the English language and its proper usage.
  • Knowledge of publishing used to integrate information in a variety of formats, such as graphs and tables
  • Skill in writing and editing to include analytical presentation of facts and ideas.

Qualifications

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in using electronic publishing software and electronic communication equipment to produce content and finished products.
  • Experience in using English language to effectively write and edit analytical material for presentation.
  • Experience in analyzing, interrupting and integrating information in a variety of formats such as graphs, tables, databases and spreadsheets.
  • Experience in developing new approaches or sources of information in order to plan and complete written assignments.

There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position.

Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in writing and editing content for publication in effort to promote organization.
  • Experience overseeing multiple digital and paper-based publication projects; while maintaining oversight of management.
  • Experience with the Semi-annual reports to Congress.
  • Experience working with a team of Communication Directors and developing videos and podcasts.
  • Experience coordinating, communicating and brief high-level Agency officials.
  • Experience responding to inquiries from external government parties.

There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-14 position.
