Attorney Editor

Role Summary:

The attorney editor in this Twin Cities based Core Editorial position will gain improved understanding of the business objectives and editorial processes for know-how products including Practical Law, Practical Law Dynamic, PL Search and Summarize, Practical Law Connect, and Clause Bank. The attorney editor will learn to use a variety of editorial tools and develop or expand skill sets including writing and editing, statutory and case-law research, and gain diverse subject-matter exposure.

About the Role:

In this opportunity as an Attorney Editor you will:

  • Work with editors from various practice area teams to maintain checklists, practice notes, standard clauses, quick compare charts, and standard documents.
  • Analyze, succinctly summarize, and reduce existing Practical Law resource information in various formats.
  • Provide substantive editorial expertise for additional tasks and projects across Editorial.
  • Perform annual maintenance on Practical Law resources to reflect recent legal developments.
  • Edit content into Practical Law's house style and plain English.
  • Support team operations and perform analyses using editorial tools such as ACT.
  • Support internal AI development by grading prompt effectiveness, document retrieval, and prompt results, among other things.
  • Prioritize work on projects related to integrating AI, Large Language Models into Thomson Reuters products, and other product development initiatives.
  • A good understanding of the needs and priorities of law firm attorneys, in-house counsel, and the legal market in general.
  • Improve Practical Law resources by approaching them using a customer/user experience lens.
  • Enthusiasm and ambition, with a desire to improve the efficiency of legal services.
  • Strong communication skills. Strong work ethic and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure all content produced is consistently of superior quality.
  • Maintain and manage internal processes, databases, and folders.

About You:

You’re a fit for the role of Attorney Editor if you have:

Desired Knowledge and Skills:

  • A J.D. degree from an American Bar Association accredited law school and at least two years' experience working as an attorney in a law firm, in-house, or other legal practice setting.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including:
    • close attention to detail;
    • good command of grammar, punctuation, and plain English; and
    • ability to write about complex legal issues clearly and simply.
  • Proficiency in and familiarity with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Fluency with Microsoft Word.
  • Awareness of AI and Large Language Models.
  • Knowledge of Practical Law style is a plus.
  • Experience with Thomson Reuters’ editorial processes, tools, platforms, and operations preferred.
  • Experience in legal editorial roles desired.
  • Prior experience with know-how preferred.
  • Candidates selected to advance will be required to submit a writing sample.

Individual and Leadership Development:

  • Participate in the employee evaluation process (both wider feedback and self-evaluation).
  • Develop knowledge of Thomson Reuters Legal products and those of its competitors.
  • Develop competence on company-specific systems.

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.

Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $64,540 - $119,860. For any eligible US locations, unless otherwise noted, the base compensation range for this role is $56,000 - $104,000.

This role may also be eligible for an Annual Bonus based on a combination of enterprise and individual performance. Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual’s knowledge, skills and experience with consideration given to internal equity. Base pay is one part of a comprehensive Total Reward program which also includes flexible and supportive benefits and other wellbeing programs.
