Position Description

Transport Engineer Tech I:

Performs [intermediate] drafting and calculations [and basic design work]; performs field work; uses automated systems. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transport Engineer Tech II:

Oversees, [manages and directs a large group] of employees responsible for the analysis, design, construction, inspection, installation, timing, repair, maintenance and testing of traffic systems, intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and related components. Work requires contact with governmental officials and the public. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transport Engineer Tech III:

Performs [advanced] drafting and calculations and [intermediate] design work; performs field work; uses automated systems [and learns specialized procedures]. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or registered architect who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Salary Plan/Grade:

  • Transport Engineer Tech I: A13 ($35,439.00 - $52,388.00/yearly)
  • Transport Engineer Tech II: A15 ($38,976.00 - $58,045.00/yearly)
  • Transport Engineer Tech III: A17 ($42,976.00 - $64,469.00/yearly)
  • The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position offered based on the applicant's work experience, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Essential Duties for a Transport Engineer Tech I:

  • Assists in preparation of quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Assists in preparation of roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, equipment and building plans.
  • Learns to use automated roadway programs, hydraulic design programs and/or interactive graphics.
  • Performs basic drafting and calculations in support of design activities; copies detailed plans and drawings.
  • Prepares field notes
  • Files and makes copies.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Essential Duties for a Transport Engineer Tech II:

  • Assists in on-the-job training of less experienced technicians.
  • Attends specialized design schools.
  • Learns to write general notes and special provisions on specifications.
  • Performs basic design work.
  • Performs intermediate drafting and calculations in support of design activities; accomplishes non-routine and complex assignments.
  • Prepares quantity summaries, hydraulic and utility studies and right-of-way maps.
  • Prepares roadway design, traffic control, lighting, signal, and building plans.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics and the Design and Construction Information System.

Additional Essential Duties for a Transport Engineer Tech III:

  • Learns additional automated design methods or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, traffic management, geometric design, signal/lighting design, retaining walls and building design.
  • Performs advanced drafting and calculations in support of design activities; develops graphic presentations that include distinctive design features
  • Performs intermediate design work.
  • Prepares environmental documents.
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Schedules, coordinates and prepares documents for public hearings.
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.

Minimum Qualifications for a Transport Engineer Tech I, II, or III:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Supervisory Experience: No supervisory experience required.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Minimum Qualifications for a Transport Engineer Tech I:

Experience: NONE (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Minimum Qualifications for a Transport Engineer Tech II:

Experience: 3 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Minimum Qualifications for a Transport Engineer Tech III:

Experience: 4 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Substitutions: Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Required Competencies for a Transport Engineer Tech I:

  • Higher mathematics
  • Building construction and contractor field procedures
  • Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments

  • Performing basic design and drafting

  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment

Additional Competencies for a Transport Engineer Tech III

  • Advanced and specialized design/drafting procedures
  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities

The physical requirements and working conditions for a Transport Engineer Tech I:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to vibration
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Balancing- walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
