MCDOT is responsible for planning, design, construction and maintenance of the County’s transportation infrastructure including roads, bridges, bikeways, paths, parking lots, garages, street lighting, sidewalks, traffic signals, drainage systems and bus shelters, in addition to operating and maintaining the County transit system.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
MCDOT is seeking an experienced engineer and manager that will serve as Chief for the Planning and Design section of the Division of Transportation Engineering (DTE). The selected candidate is:
The selected applicant will provide technical direction and project management oversight for all transportation infrastructure planning and engineering design development. The Planning and Design Section is responsible for overseeing facility planning and feasibility studies; directing the planning and design process; managing the development of the biannual budget for facility planning and design Capital Improvement Program (CIP) projects; and providing guidance for implementation of CIP transportation projects.
The Planning and Design Section Chief position ensures the high quality of the County’s transportation projects is maintained as they transition from planning to design. The chief is critical to providing continuity as a project moves to the property acquisition and construction phases.
The position will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Planning and Design Section, which consists of County and consultant staff. The section is comprised of four units that include transportation planning and design, bridges/storm drains, and sidewalks. The position is responsible for:
Providing supervision and mentoring for union and non-union employees as well as oversight and collaboration with transportation engineering consultants.
Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in a field related to planning, design and/or construction management of capital infrastructure projects, including: bridges, roads, transit facilities, storm drains, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, or related infrastructure areas.
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree.
STRONGLY-PREFERRED: Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Transportation Engineering discipline.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License: Possession of a valid Class "C" (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant's state of residence.
STRONGLY-PREFERRED: Professional Engineer (PE) License

Leave Benefits
Our generous leave package starts with non-MLS permanent and term employees earning 15 days of sick leave and 15 days of annual leave in their first year, as well as up to three additional personal days each calendar year. Positions in MLS earn 35 days of paid time off each year. In addition, we offer all employees 10 paid holidays. Retirement Benefits
All permanent and term positions are eligible for robust retirement plans. Public safety positions are eligible for a defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after only five years. Employees in non-public safety positions can participate in retirement plans that contribute up to 12 percent of their annual salary. All employees can also participate in a supplemental retirement plan, the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, to contribute even more to their retirement goals.

Montgomery County employees are eligible to participate in the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Participants who meet all requirements may qualify for forgiveness on the remaining balance on their Direct Loans after making 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time in a qualifying public service position.
